With Longview moving up to Class 5A and Marshall moving south in an East Texas district, the UIL made a move placing Sherman and Denison in a district with Texas High for the very first time since 1951. The three schools were in 5-4A for only one year together and Texas High came away with victories in both district contests. In fact, Sherman to date has only faced Texas High one other time. That was 95 years ago in the North Texas Championship Game in 1915 where Texas High came away with a 33-0 victory. In another rare occurance, Texas High and Denison have only played twice since the Lyndon Johson administration. A joint appeal with Denison and Sherman during the realignment process on the basis of travel concerns was denied by the UIL in February keeping the two schools aligned with Texas High, Mount Pleasant, Royse City, Greenville and Sulphur Springs.
Texas High despite losing quarterback Nathan Sorenson to graduation comes into the 2010 season with a very big reason to be optimistic as they bring back the most experienced team in the district as a whole. In the saddle for the Tigers is RB Kody Sutton, who rushed for nearly 1,200 yards on 11 visits to football's promised land. Joining Sutton in the offensive skill set is WR Brandon Welch, WR Joseph Thurman and TE Logan Preston. And while Sutton is the centerpiece of the Tger offense, the defense will be the strength and focus of Texas High's success in 2010. LB Edwin Hooper returns for his senior season after recording 72 tackles and grabbing eight sacks in his junior season. Next to Hooper in the linebacking core will be junior Blake McCown, who collected 65 tackles as a sophomore. Up front, the Tigers will be counting on DT Josh Bryant, DE Dorian Hooks and sophomore DT Jonathan Hunt to provide the spark.
Denison, Sherman and Sulphur Springs should all figure to be in a tight battle for second and should be the most likely trio of teams to complete the district's playoff picture. For the Yellow Jackets, losing two of their most productive players in D.J. Jones and Jordan Taylor to graduation and the collegiate ranks, refocusing on what works with what they have around them will be the key to their success in 2010. Cody White's squad still has some very decent talent that will be taking the field including S Hayden Chapman, RB/LB Stacey Golston and DT Chastin Smith. Look for the Yellow Jacket defense to get better and better as the season goes along gets into district play. The deep playoff run should help thi year's squad a great deal in knowing how to handle pressure and how to win.
Sherman comes into the year bringing QB Thor Long and RB Hayden Whitfield back for some very potential explosive sparks in the Bearcat offense. In 2009, Whitfield gained a total of 1,119 yards and picked up 19 touchdowns along the way. Next to Texas High's Sutton, he could very likely be the district's top offensive weapon. Depth on offense will be a premium for Gary Kinne and staff this season and if the Bearcats have any hope to finish as high second in district play, Long and Whitfield will have to be on their toes and play a very consistent brand of football. Defensively, DE Kyle Crick should be the spark plug for Sherman as he collected 71 tackles in 2009 and could see a much high total this season.
Sulphur Springs is a team that, for what it is worth, seems to be a mystery, yet has that it factor to them. One of the biggest pluses to Greg Owens and the Wildcats is that when the time is right to turn on that light switch to performing when it couunts, chances are they will succeed to that notion. The talent is there and so is the experience, despite losing a ton to graduation. The Wildcats do return one of the defensive players in the district in DB Sharard Timmons, who picked up 73 tackles and 4 interceptions in 2009 as a junior. Other players that should be on the high impact list are LB Joe Scott, DT Tyler Halerumal and DE Dylan Owsley. The Wildcats also have one of the top kickers in 4A in Fernando Arellano.
A team that has the biggest opportunity to spoil the party between Texas High, Denison, Sherman and Sulphur Springs is that of the Royse City Bulldogs. Don't be too surprised to see the Bulldogs sneak into the pictiure at an opportune time. Next to the Texas High Tigers, the Bulldogs are the most experienced team in the district. But the question is how much of that experience will pay off for a trip to the playoffs? Junior QB Taylor Corbin returns with 2,100 yards passing to his credit as a sophomore and appears to possibily exceed those numbers in 2010. Around Corbin, there will be plenty of support to go around boith skill wise and in the trenches including RB Jonathon Burns, OL Hunter Williams and OL Nick Gillis.
Facing a big rebuilding year, Greenville and Mount Pleasant, will be looking to make some strides in a very competitive district with two brand new head coaches at their respective schools. Mount Pleasant will be looking to Matt Graham while Greenville turns to Chawn Cooper. Both schools have a massive task at hand with very limited experience on both rosters and will require a lot of patience. But that is easier said than done in a district that includes the likes of Denison, Texas High, Sulphur Springs and Sherman.

One of the big things to know about the 13-4A recruiting circle is that there is no reason for a major school recruiting the state to avoid the region. After all, current Heisman Trophy candidate QB Ryan Mallett and current NFL All-Pro Nathan Vasher have directly out of this district from Texas High. Denison RB D.J. Jones made his way to Texas A&M and Sulphur Springs sent Beau Carpenter to Texas Tech. The overlaying message to potential recruits in this dsitrict is make the most of their opportunities. There are eyes watching just about every game in this district.
Some players that are worth mentioning that could up their stock with a very big season includes DB Hayden Chapman at Denison, LB Blake McCown at Texas High, LB Ryon Phillips of Royse City and TE Sam Redfearn of Mount Pleasant. The drive and passion of the game and what these players do in 2010 will be crucial to their future and their team's chances at a playoff push later in the year where there a lot of more eyes watching than usual. |
