HEBRON HAWKS PREVIEW |
|
By Christopher Lyke
Texas HS Football Chief Editor
For some, the 2007 edition of the Hebron Hawks exceeded far and beyond the expectations of what they accomplished. After finishing four rounds deep on a 20-10 loss to the Abilene Eagles, the Hawks suddenly find themselves in a very competitive and grinding district filled with Marcus, Flower Mound, Coppell, Lewisville and Southlake Carroll. But the grinding district schedule is not the only thing standing in the way of the Hawks making a drive for yet another deep playoff run. The non-district schedule of Brian Brazil's squad includes Wylie, Mesquite, Plano, Dallas Jesuit and Abilene Cooper.
Five starters return to the scene on both sides of the ball. Taking the snaps offensively will be Justin Iwuji, who steps in filling the shoes of a very talented Tanner Marsh. Iwuji will be joined by Darius Staten out of the backfield and a very solid, experienced group of receivers in Alex Norman, Phillip Mitchell and Zach Fleming. With Norman, and Mitchell among the state's top 2009 prospects, leadership, experience and talent. Staten, who was 14 yards shy of 1,000 in 2007, could prove to be one of the more dangerous threats in the entire DFW area as he also gobbled up 499 yards receiving. Zach Fleming, with enough work in the receiving cores, could prove to be a true diamond in the rough.
Along the lines, the return of Joel Gray should continue the Hebron tradition of talent and strength along the trenches. Gray will be joined by Stephen Goughan as the two lone returnees on the line. Taking the place of Justin Tarpley, will be a skilled and quick center in Jake Farley. Farley will also be doing the long snapping duties on special teams.
Defensively, look for the Hawks to be right back in the mix as one of the tougher and most underrated groups in the area. Leading the charge up front will be a junior gem in Michael Odiari at the defensive end position. With Odiari returning alongside Stansly Maponga, Hebron may quite possibly be the home of the most dangerous one-two punch at the defensive end position. Waiting in the wings will be junior Chris Summers.
Alex Norman returns to his linebacking duties with Michael Putman joining him for the 2008 campaign. Corey Hill and Stephen Tocci, who are returning lettermen in the middle of the defense, should end up providing the Hawks with key experience. In the backfield, look for Phillip Mitchell, to be high octane and dangerous when balls can receivers come his way. Mitchell should also be a very key sleeper in the collegiate recruiting game by the middle or end of the season. Erin McCarver joins Mitchell as a returning starter in the Hawk backfield.
