Overall in 2007 as a whole, 8-3A should be on the downside by all indications but the competitive atmosphere should be much more competitive at the top and in the middle of the race. Like last season, this district is Decatur's district to lose. So just who in the district may take the broad step towards dethroning the Eagles at the top? And can Gainesville or Bridgeport make strides to get back into the left side of the win-loss column on a consistent basis?
Despite being the favorite, Decatur will be looking to replace key holes in the skill areas including quarterback, where Brandon Cobb carried the load for the Eagle offense. With Justin Tompkins as the likely replacement, the Eagles will be looking to RB Josh Trant, who rushed for 965 yards on 11 touchdowns, as the main offensive producer. Things should should run a little smooth with Justin Unger and Chad Harrison back in the wideout positions. Defensively, Under, Jose Lira and Chad Harrison are expected to be major contributors. The concern with Kyle Story's troops is likely in the trenches.
Second place in the district could be Argyle's to lose. A potent offense could be the right recipe for Todd Rodgers and the Eagles to make a very good run for a district title and possibly a deep playoff quest. J.J. Harp, who threw for over 2,400 yards in 2006, makes a return for his senior season alongside a solid depth of recievers including Matt Handler, Brady Brown, Garrett Jones and Justin McGuffey. Key defensive players include S Gavin Pucciarello, Ben Parks. LB Trevor Cantwel and DE Cooper Sewell. Parks also serves as the team's kicker and punter and is one of the state's best in the kicking department.
Bridgport returns the most experienced team of any team in the district with eight on both sides of the ball. So Danny Henson and the Bulls do expect improvement from a 2-8 finish in 2006 and at least a run for a playoff spot. Depth in the runng back spot plus the return of WR James Kilpatrick should help quarterback Courtney Green make a significant improvement this season. The Bulls will also have one of the top defensive players in the district back in DB Mason Bridwell. With experience not an issue in Bulls camp, it will be confidence and consistency that lays the ground work between this squad being a playoff team and a playoff contender.
Gainesville could also rebound back into playoff contention before its all said and done but the Leopards will have plenty of work when it comes to stopping the opposition in its tracks. Defense will be the key to Gainesville and Matt Young's squad improving and being a contender or improving ever slightly and being a pretender. LB Alex Overstreet and Casey Matsler along with D'Shawn Franklin and DE Matt McCowan should give the Leopards some depth to work with. And for the Leopards, their season will be determined in the opposition's ability to stretch the defensive backs to a premium.
And although the Sanger Indians will be starting from scratch defensively, they should be a team that gives the rest of the district plenty of headaches providing they can work through the inexperience. A playoff team in 2006, the Indians, main strength wil be on the offensive line. If the lines can secure the holes and give the skill set plenty of times, do not expect to see a drastic drop off. |
