With the loss of the Jeremy and Justin Springer to the collegiate ranks and a slew of coaching changes at Hanna, Porter and Rivera, there should be some new and intriguing developements in how the future of the district shakes out. Three teams that should be at the top of the district ladder this year, are the same three teams that should finish 1-2-3 this season. But the question is, what order will the trio finish in? And on the other side of the district, where the Brownsville ISD schools reside, the ultimate question is what effect will the coaching changes have on the city championship?
The favorite in the district race should be the Panthers of Weslaco. The return of Mishak Rivas in the running back position and Dylan DeLeon in the quarterback position should give the Panthers a huge edge in district play on the offensive side of the ball. The dupo combined for over 3,400 yards in 2006 and could have the potential to have even more than that in 2007. Defensively Jerry Espinoza in the backfield should be the key to the Panther defense. If the Panthers can avoid the shootouts, then this team has a lot of potential to make a deep run and a quite surprising run in the playoffs as well.
Los Fresnos, with the loss of Jeremy and Justin Springer has some major holes to fill into their offense and defense. But the Falcons still have some key players on the defensive side and up front offensively, so all is not lost and this team is still a very dangerous team to play with. Mario Beanvides, one of the top offensive linemen in the state and the region, returns for his senior season as a Falcon. The likely successor at the quarterback position is Danny Silva and junior DB Luis Charles has the potential to become a key impact defensive sleeper. If Los Fresnos can keep the momentum and experienced players aligned, then this year's team should have a shot to repeat as district champion.
If there is a sleeper among the 32-5A teams, San Benito looks to be that team in the 2007 season. The Greyhound offense returns all but two of last season's starters including QB Abel Agurre and WR Angel Martinez. Aguirre is making the move from running back to quarterback this season. If the offense can be a consistent threat and produce, the Greyhounds may have some hope to contend at the top. But that depends on how well the defense can adjust. The key holdovers on defense are DL Edgar Perez and LB Kevin Escobedo. Stopping the deep threat defensively could be the difference between San Benito as a third place team and a second or first place team.
For the final playoff spot and the city championship in Brownsville, the Hanna Golden Eagles and Pace Vikings look to be headed for a collision. But do not count out the potential for Porter, with new coach Roberto Valdez, to make plenty of noise and play a key role as spoiler. Hanna, with new coach Tom Chavez, will have some solid holdovers in the trenches. The experienced line could help the Golden Eagles youth-filled skill players a chance to develope. If Chavez can work his magic, the future could be bright at Hanna soner than later. Look for DE Favio Balladares to have a breakout season.
Pace will be looking to seek revenge on the Lopez Lobos in 2007. With that extra motivation, LB Ruben Duarte will be seeking to add on to his 105 tackle sophomore season as junior. Experience on the offensive skill spots may turn into Pace's big hope, but Porter with 14 of its 21 starters back may be back on the rise. Adrian Moya at quarterback and Joey Flores on the defensive line be the keys to the Cowboys chances at a playoff run. |
