The last few years under Joe Salinas, the La Villa Cardinals have enjoyed a stay atop the district standings and emerged as a solid regional power. Now the question for the Cardinals is, whether or not that success can continue as Salinas took another head coaching job at Class 2A Van Horn. And despite losing both the offensive and defensive players of the year, the Cardinals still have plenty of firepower to carry similar success into the 2007 season. Taking over for Joe Salinas, will be another successful assistant coach from Class 4A RGV Edcouch-Elsa in Eugenio Garza.
The question for the Cardinals is not whether or not they can continue to have the success that they have enjoyed the last couple years, but whether or not they can continue to maintain a high level of confidence, expectation and desire to move forward and go to the next level. With WR/DB Rocky Rodriguez making his return on both sides of the ball, the Cardinals will have no shortage of leadership and playmakers. With solid depth on the lines, Rodriguez, J.D. Cisneros, Roseman Romero will be looking to help the younger skill players develope and continue the success they have had in recent years.
As for who will be the likely team to make a move and bite into La Villa's district domination, senior dominated Bruni could be the big threat with Ben Bolt lodging a close third. The Bruni Badgers should solid defensively as LB Rolando Castillo makes his return alongside Armin Lozano with Miguel Lira and Manuel Palacios up front. If Bruni can work through the momentum of last season's solid 8-3 season and turn around their luck against Ben Bolt and La Villa, then the Badgers could be a potential darkhorse to not only win the district, but become a solid surprise within the regional playoff picture.
Ben Bolt's J.T. Lopez, could end up being the district's top offensive producer before its all said and done. The Badgers should be a team that eats up plenty of clock on the offensive side of the ball providing the defense can do its job. All of the Ben Bolt Badgers first team defensive players last year were returning seniors, So experience could be on their side.
Youth on the Benavides side, could give the Eagles a big challenge in the district race, but if the young Eagles can overcome the odds, they may find themselves in a good playoff hunt. In order for the Eagles to make their way into the picture, a solid effort offensively will be needed against either Bruni or Benavides. |
