The more things change, the more things remain the same for this RGV district. Of the four playoff teams in last year's group excpected to make it back to the playoffs, all four are expected to make it back and show some improvement over last year. As to what order the quad-headed monster of the district is expected to finish is the ultimate question.
Until they are upended and taken down, the district favorite should be the Raiders of PSJA North despite losing a boat load players to graduation. The strength of this squad should be centered on the defensive side of the ball and that defense will be asked quite a bit to help carry the load for the Raiders. Michael Giles at defensive end and Jesse Diaz in the linebacking cores are expected to assume the leadership roles of the team and produce at a solid level compared to last season's squad. The question marks that surround this squad are on the offensive side of the ball. FB Jacob Jiminez is the most experienced skill player on that side of the ball as the front line expects to be the strength of the offense.
The battle for second place should come between a pair of schools that are entering the 2007 season with brand new head coaches. Harlingen's void was filled by assistant Manny Gomez when former coach Randy Creators took over as the school district's athletic director. Despite some youth dominating the offense, look for the Cardinals to be right in the thick of things. QB John Murphy, who is a junior, will be running the offense for the second straight year and expects to have a solid running game with Ted Snavely and potentially good wideout in Angel Cantu at his side. Defensively, the Cardinals will be looking for the depth in the backfield and experience in other key areas to help bring the squad back to district title contention.
Harlingen South also brings in a brand new coach with former Bay City coach Alan Cherry. Cherry and company are expecting big things this season with plenty of experience at hand but the question is whether or not the team will buy into his system at a quick pace. One of the district's top players in Sean Messick returns to call the plays on the offensive side of the ball If Messick can capitalize on an experienced line and a strong supporting defense, the Hawks may be flying high with a repeat of last season. If they can replace some key starters such as Kody Degges and Cruz Bazan, the season may be a special one.
PSJA and Economedes are expected to be the two teams battling it out for the fourth and final playoff spot. With two very polarizing styles of offense, the two teams will be hoping their ofense stars can caryy the load. For the Bears, look for RB R.J. Maldonado to take over as the leader of an offense that will see a depletion of last year's skill set stars. For Economedes, the hope is for quarterback Angel Millan to have a break out season in the works. Another key will be the return of several key defensive players on both squads. The Jags will be looking to its front lines to garner up the pressure on opposing offenses while the Bears will be sking the same of its backfield to carry the torch. The bottom line is that the battle for fourth could go either way, but if either teams falls short, the team in the rear view mirror could very well be the Edinburg North Cougars. |
