This district is practically a district that is a four team race with only three spots available. The question is who will be left out in the cold come mid-November. The favorite of the district is last year's second place finisher Raymondville. Returning all but three starters from last year's squad, should be a signal for the Bearkats that expectations will be very high towards the end of the year.
The main ingredient for Alex Leal's squad to have success this season will be on the defensive side of the ball and in the front lines of the offense. Key layers to watch in Raymondville includes DE J.C. Cortez on the defensive side and RB Dustin Alejo and OG David Rodriguez on the offensive side. Cortez, who is possibly the most talented and best player in the district, is expected to be the key leader of the Bearkat defense. He will be joined by LB Raul Pena and DB Orlando "Orly" Mesa, who expect to see drastic improvements and have big seasons. Dustin Alejo, in the backfield of the offense should get big benefits from a talented and deep offensive line.
If for any reason Raymondville fails to live up to the hype and expctation, look for Zapata to make a repeat appearance at the top of the district. Regardless, the Hawks are expected to be right at the top. A strong running game, and like that of Raymondville, an experienced offensive line, is expected to be the big contributions for a successful season. But Zapata will ned to shore up losses in several key areas of the field if they expect to be repeat district champs. Look for tackle Gilbert Garza to have monster season up front. Garza's success will be difference between Zapata being at the top or in the middle of the district race.
Third should come between Lyford and Falfurrias. The Jersys will be looking for its offense and depth to help get them out of the daunting hole they had dug into last season. While the offense is Falfurrias's key strength, the best play on the team is a defensive player in Phillip Morones. Morones will be stationed in the linebacking cores after a junior season that saw him tackle 56. If RB Ismael Alegria can bring his running style up to solid standards, the Fighting Jerseys will and could be a sleeper in the district race.
Lyford will be looking to make a return to the playoffs after finishing third last season but they will need to build momentum early in the season with a younger core of players in the spotlight. If they can control the pace in the middle of the field and win the games they are expected to win, a showdown with Falfurrias will be the key between being in or out of the hunt. |
