Texas HS Football Preview Guide 2007

Preview Guide 2007

United ruled the entire city of Laredo when it came down to the results on the scoreboard and in the win-loss column last season. Don't expect the 2007 season to be any different. While the Longhorns groom a brand new quarterback, the defense should see the spotlight shining on them. Depth in the linebacker slots should give United plenty of hope that this year ciould be an even bigger season on that side of the ball. Ramon Sandoval, Emilio Ortega and Fabian Juarez all ranged in between 110 and 75 tackles a piece. That figure could sky rocket this season if the defensive front can find its identity early in the season. Taking over Alvaro Garcia's slot at QB! will be sophomore Josh Garcia. Garcia was one of the key players in the dramatic regional semifinal game against SA Reagan during last year's playoff run. Although youth will run through the United offense, experience will be a very big asset to David Sanchez's group. One key skill player to watch is junior wide receiver Skyler Scott, who could very well be a highly sought after prospect in the year to come. As long as United is about to stick to Sanchez's system and the fundamental aspects of the game.

Alexander could be the closest team to giving United a run for their money. The Bulldogs will be counting on experience on offense and in the trenches of both sides of the ball. With a year under his belt and expectations high in 2007, junior Jerry Lopez will have the keys to the offense once again. In 2006, Lopez threw for over 2,800 yards and captured 21 touchdowns en route to earning the Newcomer of The Year honors. With Lopez in the pocket, look for WR Carlos Laurel and Jonathan Hardy to have very big and productive seasons. On the defensive side of the ball, the Bulldogs are banking on their front lines to improve and dominate to a greater extent than what they did last season. Albert Flores, Enrique Balboa, Victor Guerra and Carlos San Miguel are the four up front that should be worth watching this year. If the Bulldogs can find the replacements in the defensive backfield, then this year's Alexander team could open some eyes with a shot at United for the district title.

If Carlos Cruz has his way, the Cigarroa Toros just might be the team that opens up more eyes and shows the world that the Toros can and will be a force down the district's wild road. As a sophomore, Cruz raised many eyebrows by throwing for nearly 1,600 yards and rushing for a nearly aditional 1,200 more yards. While the Toros do not possess a great deal of depth, they do have a great deal of talent and experience in their hands. Among Cruz's weaponry, look for WR Jonathan Castillo amd RB Marc Gutierrez to have some very good numbers. Defensively, the Toros will rely on a good group of discplined players in the backfield led by Michael Robles and Armando Ovalle. LB Rafael Ramirez, who had 110 tackles last season, should also factor into an improved defensive unit.

While they are relatively young, the Martin Tigers are the district's darkhorse and could be very dangerous if they are able to use the experience of last season to their advantage. The central focus of the Tigers should be in the offensive line. With good size and talent, the front lines of the offense, led by Julio Ruiz and Jorge Flores, will be counted on to give the young skill players a chance to rattle through the cages of the opposing defenses. If the boys up front do their jobs, then look for them to be rewarded with a break out banner season by quarterback Jerry Delgado. While the offense has their own concerns with youth, the defense will share the same concerns. But this deense could have two of the best young players in the district with LB Alex Martinez and DB Charlie Cruz.

Getting into the playoffs won't exactly be a slam dunk for Martin and Cigarroa as they should feel the heat fom Nixon and Eagle Pass in the very short distance. Depth should be on the side of Nixon coach Brad Hopkins. Hopkins enters the halls of Nixon High ready to install an brand new offense and a brand new attitude. Whether or not the Mustangs buy into the system and want to reclaim the dominance they enjoyed in recent years, is the key to the Mustangs chances at making the playoff picture. Stepping into a full-time role at quarterback will be Chris Cazares. With Cazares taking the reigns of the offense, junior receivers Ramon Ochoa and Esteban Cruz will be counted on the help fit the pieces of the puzzle together. On the defensive side look for Chris Camarillo to have a break out season at the linebacker slot.

While Eagle Pass returns all but two starters on offense, the path for the Eagles into playoff contention still remains a big hurdle to climb. The Eagles will pin their hopes of playoff contention on the legs of Edgar Beattie, who gained 1,100 yards and 10 touchdowns as a junior in 2006 and the arm quarterback Joel Cano\, who threw for over 1,200 yards . And if the Eagle find their way into contention, a large part of the credit could be given to the leadership and athletic ability of LB Trey Marquez, who is lookingto improve on his 149 tackle and 8 sack performance of 2006.
