Technically speaking, there are no real clear cut favorites out of 29-1A in the 2007 season. But there is a potential to see a good team in this district to be left out in the cold come mid-November. So at least there will be some kind of interest at the end of the season for this district.
D'Hanis, with the return of Trey Mumme and Paden Lynch, could very well be one of the biggest one-two offensive threats in the entire state. Lynch, a solid passer and a very consistent passer at that, comes off the 2006 season where is threw for 1,725 yards and 15 touchdowns. But the quarterback slot is not the only place where Lynch should excel. The defensive backfield is quite possibly his better playing position on the field. Trey Mumme, is the best player in the district by a landslide and is an early season candidate for 1A MVP honors. Mumme, is a threat out of the backfield with nearly 1,000 yards rushing to his credit for the 2006 season and a solid receivier with great hands. Aside from his offensive duties, Mumme is the team's defensive leader at linebacker and has solid range as a kicker. Just how far the leadership and athletic abilities of Mumme and Lynch can take the Cowboys will be determined on how well the surrounding supporting cast plays to their level of intensity.
As one of last season's top teams in the state, Rocksprings is hoping the experience in the playoffs for the younger players translates into a repeat for the district title and possibly more. Graduation may have shot down the Angoras chances of being as good as were last season, but they are still just as dangerous as they were last season. Dual threat quarterback Zach Hernandez returns to the Angoras as a senior and is hoping to prove to many that they have not lost a beat from last year's 10-2 performance.Outside of Hernandez, look for Alex Ramirez to be a top flight receiver. If the Angoras can recooperate from the graduation losses, there is no reason this squad will be left out of the district title picture.
Another big threat to the top of district is the Tigers of Brackettville. Looking to shake off last year's subpar 6-5 season, the Tigers are expected to factor into the middle of the race at the top with some vast improvement. A player in Travis Bonner, who could see some playing time at the next level, will be a player that not see much time on the sidelines. As one of the of top rushers, defensive backs and punters in the region, a lot will be asked of Bonner to carry this team to the top. Whether it be Israel DeHoyos, Jacob Schroeder or Fermin Villanueva, if anyone of Bonner's fellow teammates can find a way to share the spotlight, Brackettville will have a chance at bigger expectations. But the key is tor the rest of the team to carry itself to higher levels of play.
One team that brings back plenty of experience and hunger from an appearance in last season's playoffs is the Yellowjackets of Sabinal. Sabinal is a team that has plenty of depth and seniors to help get them into the title picture once again. Like that of D'Hanis, Brackett and Rocksprings, the Yellowjackets also have a big time playmaker. The playmaker for Sabinal is quarterback Steve Rodriguez. Although size is a big disadvantage for the senior QB, heart and the bility to make the throw downfield should be the keys to his success. Surrounding Rodriguez on the offensive side of the ball, look for solid contributions from Aniseto Alejandro, Taylor Nunley and Josh Contreras. If the defensive front can rise to the occasion and play as well as they did last season, there is no reason the Yelowjackets will not be in the middle of the district title picture. |
