Texas HS Football Preview Guide 2007

Preview Guide 2007
By Christopher Lyke
Texas HS Football Chief Editor

Last season this district saw what ended up being a wild finish to the end. A two way tie at the top, third place with just two losses and fourth decided via a head to head tie-breaker. Could we possibly see more of he same from this district in the 2007 season? Or could we see a team break out from the rest of the pack?

With almost anything being possible, picking out a district favorite is not the easiest thing to identify out of this district. The team that won the head to head tie breaker over cross-town rival King, could very well be a favorite to win the district. Afterall, Carroll, does bring back eight defensive starters. Depth up front in the defense includes Jack Zapata, J.T. Davies, Aaron Barnes and Jeremy Ortiz. One of the key assets of the Tiger defense could the hands and awareness of defensive back Buck Sims. On the offensive side, the Tigers have the best player in the district in quarterback Tim Hawkins. Hawkins in 2006, threw for nearly 1,300 yards and 12 touchdowns and returns with a pair of solid rushers who are both very talented and nderclassmen. If Hawkins can help the younger rushers lead their way through the field, the Tigers may have a district title in their sights.

Another team that may have plenty to say will be the East Central Hornets, like the Carroll Tigers, the Hornets were not ultimately part of the district title holders, but did make the playoffs. And like Carroll, experience will be a key asset in their district title hopes. With most of the skill set players back on offense, and all but two players back on the defensive side the Hornets have high expectations ahead for the 2007 season. QB Matt Ortega returns for his senior season and has a good depth along the lines to help proetct him. Among those in the front watch for is senior center Chris Real. Opposite of Real and Ortega, Breland Robinson in the linebacker spot and Charles Mayberry in the defensive backfield will assume the roles of top playmakers and leaders.

One of last season's co-district champs in Southwest should factor into the race in some fashion. Defense for the Dragons will be the primary strength and focus for a path back into the playoffs. LB Tyler Fields should be the assumed leader of the Dragon defense next to DB Jorge Sauceda and LB Roland Garanzuay. If the Dragoons can shore up the holes up front, thenm expect the defense to play a big role in whether Southwest gets back into the distict title picture. Other key players to watch of interests are QB Tony Lira, RB Stephen Salinas and lineman Jacoby Van Zant.

With a new coach comes a new direction and a new attitude for the Vipers of Victoria Memorial. The Vipers already have high hopes and expectations that the 1-9 slide of the 2006 season will result in a very upswing in 2007. The depth in the trenches and experience of several key returnees on the defensive side should trigger some significant improvement. Stud linebacker John Jameson, could be the top defensive player in the district before it is all said and done. If Jameson can rally the troops on defense and follow his lead, Memorial's playoff chances will go up in a very significant way. On the offensive side, junior Kyle Moczygemba steps under center to handle the conrols as fullback Keith Barefield returns from an innjury-riddled season and tackle Justin Campbell makes his best efforts to provide the holes and protection.

A cross town affair betwen Ray and King should see the possibility of at least one or two Corpus Christi schools joining Carroll i the playoff chase. Both teams will be looking to more than spoil the party. They are looking to be invited to it. King will be reliant upon rusher Phillip Thomas to carry the ball and the Mustangs back into the hunt. Ray will be counting on quarterback Jerry Bell to repeat last year's spectacular feat and reclaim at least a share of the district title or possibly more. If either King or Ray get overlooked, the district will be that much more interesting.
