Texas HS Football Preview Guide 2007

Preview Guide 2007

With the loss of quarterback Giovanni Vizza and Sam Dibrell to graduation and the University of North Texas, the Alamo Heights Mules will find it a tall order to repeat last season's accomplishments as a state championship team. Just how close Tivy, Fredericksburg and Boerne can close the gap will be the intriguing storyline of the 2007 season.

But with one step at a time, the Mules will turn their attention towards defending their district crown first. Receiver Cody Courtney is the likely candidate to fill the shoes of Vizza. While Courney adjusts to the QB1 slot, he will have plenty of key and top notch returnees returning as primary targets. Out of the backfield, Sergio Acosta and Colton Haverda will be seeking to add more production and give the receivers some much needed room to become biger threats. The prime target should be Bobby Broadnax. As one of Vizza's key targets last season, Broadnax picked up 55 reception and added 793 yards. On the other side of the ball, look for the defensive backfield to be the headliners as a rebuilding effort begins early in the season. DB Craig Thompson is the Mules' top defensive player and will be counted on as a key leader in returning the team to last year's form.

Despite a sub-par record last season, the Kerrville Tivy Antlers managed to sneak into the playoffs. Now in the 2007 season, will look to dethrone the Mules at the top with a far more experienced and motivated group of players. Defensively, the Antlers bring back all but two starters and has the best player in the district in LB Kyle Prater. Alongside Prater, a promising junioor defensive end in Colton Pepper expects to be a player that is a recruiting sleeper over the next two years. Henry Johnson, who will double as a tight end on offense and linebacker on defense, also expects to have a much more productive 2007 season. Speaking of the offense, the Antlers will see junior Colton Palmer as the full-time starter at quarterback while a majority of the offensive line comes back to provide the protection. If the Tivy offensive skill set can control the path and tempo of the game, look for the Antlers to give the district title a serious possibility.

The battle for third will be head to head battle between the Fredericksburg Battlin' Billies and Boerne Greyhounds. Last season, Fredericksburg finished as the district runner up and expects to be in the district title picture this season. With solid talent and returnees in the trenches, the Billies are counting on the skill position players to bring improved performances. To provide that asset on the defensive side will be DE Travis Maner and on the offensive side are RB Craig Petty and QB Caleb McCrea.

Boerne, which has had a solid history of special teams in recent years, probably has another pair of gems to work with as punter Scott Seeber and kicker Nathan Van Oort return for their senior seasons. Defense however will be the Greyhounds big strength. Look for linebacker Kyle Beach to make a big impact alongside defensive end Josh Wray. Jay Kazen, a defensive lineman, will also see time on the offensive side as a tight end. How Boerne reacts to Danny Threadgill in his first season as Greyhound head coach, will be a determination of whether they are a playoff contender or playoff pretender.
