Texas HS Football Preview Guide 2007

Preview Guide 2007

For the East Bernard Brahmas, the 27-2A race is their race to lose. And despite not having the individual stand out that strikes out as big time, the Brahmas still are very dangerous and appear to be very hungry to show they belong in the top of the conversation. With that said, the Brahmas are indeed the favorites to repeat as the 27-2A champions. The benefits of anexperienced line and a strong running game will be the keys to East Bernard's chances at a repeat. Despite missing two games at the end of the season, rusher Mike Hayes accouned for almost 1,000 yards and 15 trips into the endzone. Alongside Hayes will be his counterpart, junior Lance Crump. Expect Crump to become a very big part of Jerry Long's gameplan. Other than the running game and depth in the trenches, the Brahmas will be counting on a good linebacking core to guide them defensively.

So who will be in the mix for dethroning the East Bernard Brahmas at the top? All signs point to eiher Wallis Brazos or Boling to hold that honor. But do not count out or be stunned to see a sudden emergence of Danbury to get into the picture.

The Brazos Cougars are very hungry and eager to return to the top of the district as they are a much more experienced and talented group than what they were in the 2006 season. Offensively, the Cougars will be switching receiver Leland Murray over to quarterback and pinning their hopes that the rushing ability of both Derek Brewer and Antoine Jackson proves to be a lethal combination for opposing defenses to handle. Brewer is coming off a 2006 campaign where he touched the ball 100 times and grabbed 671 yards of dirt. But the running game is not the only focus of the Cougars. Look for the defense to fair far better in 2007 as linebacker John Trevino makes his mark on the field again.

For a strong third place finish, the Bling Bulldogs will be looking to use the services of the district's top player in B.W. McLeod. McLeod in 2006 rushed for over 1,000 yards and collected 17 trips to football's promised land and shows no sign of slowing down. WIth plenty support around McLeod, the Bulldogs could be the big sleeper in the district if the talent and experience around them sticks to the fundamentals and ignores the press clippings. Speed and experience of the Bulldogs will be the central theme and look for two younger talents to make a name for themselves in quarterback Justin Hobbs and all-purpose player Kalin Ray.

Despite finishing 2-8 in 2006, the Danbury Panthers could on the rise once again and they will have quitepossibly one of the region's most explosive offensive combinations. Quarterback Scott Zimmerle and wide receiver Jake DeBerry, both juniors this season, are going to be heard from and will be very dangerous in the open air of Danbury's offense. While DeBerry is a solid threat in the receiving cores, Zimmerle, could be the most dangerous offensive player in the district as a dual threat on the ground in the air. The key for Danbury's chances at a playoff appearance will rest on how the offensive line can produce and protect the timing between Zimmerle and DeBerry.
