Texas HS Football Preview Guide 2007

Preview Guide 2007

When you pack all nine teams in the district into a small house, the breathing room gets a little more less comfortable. From top to bottom, this district has been known as one of the state's best and the 2007 edition of this wild and crazy district is no different. The teams in this district are all capable of making a very deep and inquisitive run.

The Smithson Valley Rangers have become a standard staple atop the district mountain. And despite losing key talent year in and year out, the Rangers have managed to do a very solid reloading transition. This season, the Rangers will be looking to replace key talent in key areas such as quarterback and the defensive line. Replacing quarterback Bryan Hill will likely be David Pawelek. But aside from Pawelek entering the picture, the Rangers have one of the top rushers in the region back in Trent Rios and a very talented offensive line. Rios in 2006 grabbed 1,173 yards and 21 touchdowns and is expected to bring in many more yards in this upcoming season. Pawelek and Rios will have plenty of support and blockers to give them ample time production. The Rangers have what could possibly be the very best offensive line in the entire state at all levels. Tommy Parsons, James Fry and Shawn Wyatt, who are three of the big linemen up front, will be heard from in a very big way. On the defensive side for Smithson Valley, Zac Russell, is the most experienced and talented player on the that side of the roster. While he holds his stand at the linebacker slot, several promising defensive backs such as Ben Woodchick, Domic Hamilton and Hayden Hughes will be aiming to solidify the backfield. Up front, keep and eye on Cory Rosenthal and Collin Schurbet to make some serious noise.

Last season, a young Madison squad got off to a very hot and promising start to the 2006 season before find some hardships late in the season. Now in the 2007 season, the Mavericks will be aiming to make sure the late season woes do not become a common theme. If this group plays well enough and lives up to its own abilities, do not be shocked to see Madison at the top of the district. For Jim Streety's offense, they return the explosive and talented Devin Thomas. As a junior, Thomas earned All-State and All-Region honors with 2,000 yards all-purpose and 23 touchdowns to his credit. But Thomas is not the only weapon in Madison's offensive arsenal. WR Chris Powell is expected to have a solid senior season along with Joey Boyd. The key on offense for Madison will be the production of the offensive lines led by Josh Corby. If Corby can help the younger linemen grow into their spots, the Mavericks could be even more dangerous than they already are. On the defensive side, the Mavericks will be much improved and will be looking to make significant progress from last season's late woes. LB Jason McLean and Andrew Green have proven that they are two of the region's most most promising defensive talents. McLean will have plenty of depth at his position to surround him and allow him to improve the way the Mavericks approach the opposition. But if Madison intends to compete for a district title and assure themselves a playoff berth, the play on the defensive front must make significant progress.

One of the state's biggest late season playoff surprises were the Rattlers of Reagan High. Finishing the regular year with a 6-4 mark, Reagan's expectations were not highly looked upon. In the end, the Rattlers found a trip to the fourth round of the playoffs. Like Madison and Smithson Valley, the Rattlers have a speedster of their own returning on the offensive side of the ball in Marcus Wright. Wright accumulated 2,752 yards and 33 touchdowns on 364 carries through 14 games in 2006 and shows no sign of looking for a slow down. With his now junior quarterback Derrick Walls returning alog with crucial part of the offensive line, the Reagan Rattlers will be hard pressed to sneak up and enter the late part of the season unnoticed. While Reagan looks to build its offensive production around Wright, the defense will be the centerpiece to Reagan's district title hopes. Juniors Donald Harvey and LaQuince McCall are expected to be the leaders of a very hungry group of players looking to show that their defensive stand is one of rhe most improved in the entire region. Unproven talent in the defense one of the key concerns for David Wetzel's Rattlers but if they can build around last season's late season run, the Rattlers could be even more dangerous this season.

In any event, fourth place, like the district championship picture should be a drag race and look like a photo finish at the Kentucky Derby. The Judson Rockets are considered to be the front runners for the fourth and final playoff spot, but in the rear view mirror is MacArthur, Churchill and quie possibly a still young, but promising Wagner squad. The challenge will be trying to stop the three-headed rushing monsters at Madison, Smithson Valley and Reagan. If any of the fourth place contenders can stop one, two or all three, then look for that team to take great strides towards competing for a district title.

While missing the playoffs last season at Judson is very characteristic and very unusual to say the least, the Rockets were right in the middle of the race last season. Now Jim Rackley is expecting significant improvement and a strong push for the playoffs. The big emphasis on the Rockets season will be its defensive holdovers. DE/LB Cory Williams will be back and back with plenty of sour apples already in his taste buds from last season's sudden finish. WIlliams, looks to build on a season where he grabbed 77 tackles and he will be joined by promising junior defensive end Chris McAllister and tackle Jay Morales. The Judson defense, as it has always been in recent years, a fast and agressive one, will also see some key returnees in the secondary such as Charles Gifford and Dominic Maddox. With the defense aiming to return its roots, the offense with the return of Austin Quinney is expecting to see some better days ahead. Quinney, who also doubles as the team's kicker and punter on special teams, will have some good talent and returnees back to help make the scoreboard rise in their favor. Kouri Jones, a sophomore who could also see time in the defensive backfield, is expected to contibute on the offensive side of the ball alongside senior tight end Terrance Houston and rusher Mitchell Swain. The key for Judson offensively is to find solid replacements up in the trenches. If the trenches are secured well, Judson could become a solid darkhorse.

Both Churchill and MacArthur, as playoff teams last season, should be in the running at some point in the district race. However both the Chargers and the Brahmas face a huge rebuilding scene on both sides of the ball. If they can shore up the holes and their returnees can set a good example among the younger players, expect good things to come. Among the key players to watch on both teams includes WR Phillip Burns and LB Brett Maze for Churchill and DE Zach Williamson and QB Tyler Chambers for MacArthur.
