The class and cream of the crop in this district is Wimberley. After a state championship two years ago and a 12-2 finish a year ago, the Texans have managed to create a nostalgic staple at the top of the regional and statewide rankings and favorability polls. There is no sign in the 2007 that aroma of the Wimberley dominance in district and regional play ending any time soon. In this district, like 10 other districts in 3A, 75 percent of the teams or three of the four will get a taste of playoff action. In turn, every team has a case to say they are playoff bound. Of the remaining three teams, which will be on the outside looking in? And which will pose the biggest threat to Wimberley at the top?
Speaking of the Texans, replacing nine starters on the offensive side of the ball including Michael Buse and Ricky Beaty in the line up will be no easy task. So look for the defense to be the storyline of the Texan season as they return stud linebackers Chad Skunda, Harley West and Sean McDonald. The trio last season combined for over 300 tackles and if the Texans expect to get back to the level they were at a year ago, they will be looking to repeat their performance and possibly improve on it. Skunda is expected to be a big contributor on the offensive side of the ball at running back alongside West. Taking the place of Beaty at the quarterback position will be junior Barron Scudder. The key for Wimberley on offense will be the production of Scudder and the running game, so expect the trenches, led by Clayton Walker, to become the ultimate line between the Texans contending or pretending in the statewide championship picture.
Second place should come down to Llano and Bandera with the Yellow Jackets holding the upper hand. David Yeager's squad returns last season's surprisingly solid backfield in Lance Dickey and Ty Thurman. With a combined 2,300+ yards and 21 touchdowns out of the backfield, this duo could be the best kept secret in all of Class 3A Region IV. Now heading into their senior seasons, Dickey and Thurman should see higher expectations and are expected to show significant improvement in their production. With solid depth in and experience in the lines, it is possible to see Llano make a push to challenge Wimbereley at the top of the district. Like that of Wimberley, Llano's strength on the defensive side of the ball should be in the linebacking cores. Andy Virdell, Austin Freeman, Seth Simpson and Logan Davis are expected to lead the charge in the middle of the defense. However, if Llano has any plans to make a run atop the district and against Wimberley, they will have to work hard on passing situations.
Third should be a strong lock for Bandera at the minimum. New coach Larry Prince has his work cut out for him but he should have a good deal of depth to his Bulldog squad. Like Llano and Wimberley, defense will be the headline for this year's Bandera squad. Look for DE Andy Smith, DL Thomas Karlson and Jacob Dial to be the key guys up front and in the rest of the Bulldog defense. The defense, like that of last season, will get tested early in the season. The Bulldogs will, on both sides of the ball, needs to improve on productivity and maintain a strong level of confidence to get them through the pre-district grinnd. In the skill areas of the field, look for Franklin Brown, Cole Hicks and Cole Hubble to become the keys to success.
If Moore is looking break through the win column this season and find improvement in their program, staying focus is going to be key. Justin Martinez and Wade King are expected to be the top prodcers on either side of the ball, but Martinez and King will be relying on experience and skill to get them into the playoff hunt. |
