Texas HS Football Preview Guide 2007

Preview Guide 2007

The biggest difference between this year's district race and last year's is that the teams in lower half of the district should see significant improvement. But it is expected that the same teams in last year's playoff race are expected to be right in the middle of a hotly contested race again this season. Last season saw the district title shared by Salado and Rogers while third was decided by a tie-breaker based on a head-to-head match up between Troy and Jarrell. Will we see a repeat of last year's nail biter finish? Will we see a team break loose from the pack? And which of the teams from the bottom half of the district draw claw their way into contention this season?

Salado and Rogers should be the favorites to make a repeat of last season's neck and neck showdown for the district title. Salado will have good depth and talent at their dispersal on the offensive side of the ball as they bring back several key skill position players and linemen. Getting the nod at quarterback will be dual-threat senior David Rosenau. Rosenau and the Eagles will be strong in the running game and in the trenches. Two of the region's most talented linemen return in place on the Eagle roster in Dallas Butts and Chase Stucky. Defensively, safety Matt Fritsch and linebacker Josh Bush will be counted upon to make the big play and give the defense a major boost in confidence and momentum.

Rogers has perhaps one of the best players in the region and district in LB Marcus Psencik. The strength of the Rogers Eagles will be felt on both sides of the ball in the trenches.Caleb Spencer, Cameron Doskocil and Bronc Rice are three of the big workhorses up front. Spencer is expected to spend trime at the linebacker spot alongside Psencik while Rice and Doskocil are up front defensively. While defense is the focus of John Stillwell's crew, the offense will be looking to reload and retool in sevrral key areas. Some players up for key spots in the offensive scheme are players with limited experience. If they inexperienced players grow into their roles quickly, look for a possible district title out of the Eagles.

Third should play out in similar fashion like last year. A battle and a tie-breaker between Troy and Jarrell. For Troy, Jacob McMurtry will assume the full time role as the team's quarterback. As McMurtry makes the move as full time starter, he will be jjoined by another key element to the Trojans chances at a playoff appearance in Jeremy Conrad. The offense will be the key to setting the momentum of the Trojan season, but it will be the young defense that will set the tone. Bryson Jones and Andrew Taylor, as juniors, will be considered as the key leaders on the defensive side of the ball.

Do not be surprised if Jarrll ultimately becomes a sleeper into the district title race. Despite being the smallest team in the district population wise, the Cougars expect to be in the middle of a playoff race whether it is from the top of the ladder or in the middle of it. Defense should be the thenme that gives the Cougars its due in the vast expanse of the district crowd. Travis Franklin, a senior linebacker, is probably the top defensive player in the district next to Rogers' Marcus Psencik. If Franklin puts up similar numbers to his nearly 160 tackle performance in 2006, Jarrell could be in for a treat.

Out of the middle of the pack, look for either Florence or Lago Vista to emerge as potential sleepers or spoilers. Florence, with a new coach, is expecting this season to be a season where they cause havoc and find better production out of it's game plan. If the Buffaloes can execute their game plan and remain focused, look for the bar to raise on the district competitively. Lago Vista is probably returning the most experienced team but like that of Florence, they are coming off a dismal and gut wrenching 1-9 season. The question regarding Lago Vista and Florence is whether or not either team will have enough gas left in the tank when it will count the most.
