Texas HS Football Preview Guide 2007

Preview Guide 2007

Despite the loss of Foswhitt Whitaker and Sam Proctor among others, the Pearland Oilers are still considered as the class of this district. Just who will make the jump to challenge the Oilers? And just how will the Brazoswood Buccaneers do after a surprising 11-2 season last year? In any event, this could be a very interesting district race to see on just how close the gap gets between Pearland and the rest.

The Pearland Oilers should and will be considered as the essential favorite to win the district. With some very big shoes to fill the Oilers will seek the experience of other positions to help spring board the offense. Tight end Kevin Davis and wide receiver Kevin Miller are the two most experienced offensive skill players on the roster. But the return of stud lineman Brian Thomas should help the Oilers gain some confidence in replacing Whitaker and Proctor. The defense will be the side of the ball that will be asked to carry the load for Pearland in 2007. Benard Obi at the defensive end position and Nick Saenz in the backfield are two of the hardest hitting and aggressive players in the region. If the defense can do its part, look for Pearland to do some damge late in the year.

If Galveston Ball can use its experience to its advantage, they should be a legitimate contender for the district title. On offense, the controls will be handed over to Andre Patino once more. Patino in 2006 was a 1,400 yard passer and should get plenty of support from tailback Eddie Brown. Brown will likely see his production increase as the lines gain more experience. But Ball's top player is Mike Littleton, who will be stationed nicely in the defensive backfield. Look for Littleton's return to give Ron Holmes and company a chance to make big improvements. If Ball High can be consistent in the way they control the tempo of the game, a district title, again, should in order.

Clear Lake could be a potential darkhorse candidate in the district. With an experienced defense and line, the Falcons will also count on its younger offensive players to grind out the playoff chase. On the defensive side, Cody Worthern, Nathan Snow, Jake Runte and Dylan Dement are expected to carry the load out of the backfield. The Falcon defensive front should be very fast, talented and battle tested by the time district play rolls around. Stephen Barrera and Nick Adams could be potential D1 players out of the end positions and combined for over 100 tackles and six sacks in 2006. Offensively, Michael Grant could be headed for another superb season with the help of OL Scott Fritz. If the Falcons can find its identity offensively, expect a big season at Clear Lake.

Fourth place should come between Brazoswood and Clear Creek, but it is ultimately Brazoswood's spot to lose. Last season the Buccaneers surprised many with their successful run. Now its time for Dean DeAtley's Bucs to prove that last year's squad was not just a one-hit wonder. Returning to make sure that does not occur will be the district's leading returning rusher in Yobis Walker. Walker in 2006 compiled just under 1,400 yards and 17 touchdowns. Next to Walker will be last year's district newcomer, Kendell Brown. The combination of Brown and Walker along with the return of one of the district's top linemen in Jon Arthur should bring Brazoswood's chances of a repeat performance to an similar level to what it was last season. The question mark for the year's Bucs squad will be the defense. LB Andre Van Leeuwen makes his return to the squad but he will be surrounded by plenty of youth that will be tested early and has plenty of responsibility, One of the promising young stars expected to contribute is DB Travis Lundy.

Clear Creek will be resting its hopes on several key seniors including Neal Warden, Taylor Johnson and Paul Vaughn. Warden will be taking the controls on an offense once again for his senior season. After a junior season that saw nearly 2,000 yards passing, Warden will have to count on youth to throw at. With Taylor Johnson up front, in the offensive trenches with a couple other key returnees, Warden and the Wildcat offense may have a solid chance to develope some chemistry early in the season. Defensively, Paul Vaughn and Derek McGahee are expected to be the primary leaders and focus of a defense that returns seven of its eleven starters from last season's playoff team. But watch of junoir DB Marcus Davis. Davis could blossom into a very superb prospect over the next season. As a sophomore, Davis coughed up 57 tackles and had 2 interceptions.
