Texas HS Football Preview Guide 2007

Preview Guide 2007
By Christopher Lyke
Texas HS Football Chief Editor

Since the final whistle was blown on the 2006 season for Lamar Consolidated, the news and winds of change was wild and rampant. First thing first was the graduation of several key studs in the district including Jarvis Jones, James Rodgers, Lee Orr and James Cannell. Then there was the ever revolving door of the Texas High School Football coaching fratenity. Bay City found a replacement for Alan Cherry, who would land in the RGV after being let go as Blackcat head coach. And Lanar Consolidated nearly lost their head coach to Bay City's main rival in La Marque, but Lydell Wilson remains in place as the Mustangs main man.

Now the 2007 season is just around the corner and the Lamar Consolidated Mustangs are still the district favorites. While it should be pointed out that Lamar has lost several key players from last year's 13-1 squad, including half of the line and one of the Rodgers brothers, this team has the potential to be right back where they finished last season. The reason being is because the Mustangs have two of the most explosive and most prolific athletes still sitting on their roster for the 2007-2008 school calendar. The question is how much protection will both Jacquizz Rodgers and D.J. Smallwood get out of the newcomers on the line. The early part of the 2007 season for Lamar Consolidated may set the tone of what we can expect later in the year.

Offensively, Lamar Consolidated returns, again, two of the state's most prolific players, and quite possibily one of the most dangerous one-two offensive punches the state has seen in quite some time. In 2006, Jacquizz Rodgers rushed for 2,592 yards and grabbed 52 touchdowns while his counterpart D.J. Smallwood threw for 1,900 yards and picked up 17 touchdowns while rushing for 428 more yards. On the receiving end of some of these passes from Smallwood, look for sophomore Marcel Threat to become a big time threat of his own.

On the defensive side of the ball, a strong front with Andrew Ngwaogwugwu and Deante Ester at the ends should help shore up losses in the middle. But expect senior LB Sule Osagiede to be a strong leader and have a very big year. If Osagiede can help the defense find its identity and keep the offense on the field, the Mustangs could find itself in prime position to make a run at the state championship.

Rosenberg Terry and El Campo should have an eventful season battling it out for playoff position and possibly holding off Bay City for the final playoff spot. Terry's big strength, wont be on the offensive or defensive side of the ball. It will be in the special teams areas with the clutch kicking game of Paul Rosales and punting duties of Kevin Smith. Terry alos has two very big recruiting sleepers in the receiving cores with Anthony Brown and Lekenwic Haynes. The bottom line for Terry is its deoth in the lines. If the line can protect the quarterback and allow the passing game to do its thing, Terry will raise some eyebrows and give the rest of the district something to think about.

El Campo's strength, unlike that of Terry and Lamar Consolidated, will be in the defensive units and in the trenches. Junior Tompkins and Troyy Lawson will be counted on heavily for protection of rushers Maverick Smith, Anthony Terrell and incoming sophomore Landon Appling. If the Ricebirds can establish the running game to perfection, then watch out for a great district sleeper. Aside of from its running game and its line, Bob Gillis and the RIcebirds have what is quite possibly the best defensive backfield in the district with Appling and Thad Deiss. Look for Deiss to have a very big year if the balls come his way.

All things aside, despite missing the playoffs for the first time in 11 years and undergoing a change at head coach, it should not be ruled out with Bay City making return to the playoffs in 2007. The return of most of their starters should give the Blackcats all the more reason to make this season one that will stand out in the eyes of many as the return of Bay City to the playoff scene. OL Mitch Kimberling, who is quite possibly the best player on the team, will be a key leader on the lines and in the huddle. And if they allow Shaun Rutherford the opportunity to showcase his ability to lead the offense, Bay CIty could the one team that causes headaches to the top three district contenders.
