For 24-2A, the big headline and question of the season will be how far the East Chambers Buccaneers can go with its star player Tramain Thomas. Will we see the return of a similar senario play out in the outlook for the district playoff battle? And can the Anahuac Panthers and/or Warren Warriors make a push to seize some of the glory in district play? In any event, some of the statewide spotlight will be shining on this district in some way, shape or fashion at some point in the season. Finally, the big question is whetehr or not the teams in this district can make strides to unseat the powerhouses and mystique of the major players in 2A Region III?
Undoubtedly, with many of their starters back including one Tramain Thomas, the East Chambers are the heavy favorite to win the district and make a potential deep playoff run. Just how far Thomas can carry the Buccaneers remains to be seen and given the top heavy Region III playoff scene, it will be no easy task. An expereinced but youthful skill set in Tony Valastro's camp on offense should be very crucial in the just how much damage they can inflict. Fullback Donte Raymond and tight end Vance McDonald should see plenty of opportunity to cash in as crucial parts of the offense. But they will also be counted on to bring stability and leadership to the Buccaneer defense. Alongside Thomas, Raymond and McDonald on defense, look for Paul Trammell to repeat as the district's premiere defensive player.
Second place in 24-2A should be a battle between the Deweyville Pirates and Buna Cougars, as it was last season. Dwight Bickham's Deweyville offense returns all but two of their starters from a year ago. Returning to take the controls of the offense will be Brandon Powell. Powell will be joined in the backfield by junior Kane Kachtik and Cruzz Thrailkille. The experience and depth of Deweyville's offensive line and backfoeld, it is quite possible to see the Pirates make a run at the top. But for the Pirates to reach that plateau, the defense will have some work to do in controlling the opposition. Most of the Pirates top defensive players are penciled in at the linebacker slots. Look for improvement in the defensive front, but the Pirates will need to avoid the shootouts.
Buna, like that of a majority of teams in the district returns a vast majority of their starters. The top player to watch in Cougars camp will be WR/DB Ryan Sheppard, who enters the 2007 season as a junior. The return of several players in the trenches gives Buna a golden oppoetunity to seize the spotlight and allows this year's group to build upon last year's successful run in district play. If the Cougars can utilize some consistency in the defensive areas, the sky is the limit to how this squad can perform.
On the outside looking in could be either Warren or Anahuac. Warren has two players that may be worth watching for a breakout season. Both are two-way starters returning with the purpose of inching into the playoff picture. QB/DB Travis McBee, a senior, will be making the move to full-time QB1 and defensive back while junior RB/LB Brazos Morris gets his feet wet into a very competitive district. Anahuac will be looking to use the experience of last year's stuggles as a spring board of success in 2007. If the Panthers can limit their mistakes, then look for them to become a very solid district darkhorse. |
