In all of Class 1A, District 24-1A, with Hull-Daisetta, West Hardin, Sabine Pass, Evadale and High Island is probably one of the state's most under rated, under appreciated and under looked districts out there. One of the more interesting storylines of the district is not about what has happened at the top of the standings, but rather in the middle of the district. The race for third last season came between the Evadale Rebels and Sabine Pass Sharks.

But there was the story within the story of the district race. A year removed from being wiped out by the wrath of Hurricane Rita, the Sharks not only defied the odds of strapping on the pads and returning to normal life, they finished one game out of the playoff picture. Regardless of whether they made or missed the playoffs, the will and determination of the Sabine Pass school district and the football program is one of the stories that will not soon be forgotten.

Now in the 2007 season, the district race should seem to be just as it was last season. A two team battle at the top and in the middle. And like last year, the two teams at the top should be West Hardin and Hull-Daisetta. For West Hardin, the ultimate task of the the early season jitters will be finding a way to replace the impact of Brandon Letsinger. Letsinger's replacement should come in the form of junior Tyler Copeland, who saw limited action last year as QB2. For the running game look for Ethan Tubbs to have a very good season considering the depth of the offensive line will be a big advantage for the Oilers. Jasper Fillingame and Austin Laird should be the keys to a strong Oiler offense. On the opposite side of the ball, look for LB Jerid Bordes to be the key leader of a strong defense. Like the offensive side of the ball, strength and depth should in the trenches. As long as the linebackers and boys up front do their jobs, look for the Oilers to be right in the thick of the district championship picture.

The return of reigning District MVP Franklin Smith should give the Hull-Daisetta Bobcats a big boost and case to be a legitimate favorite as the district frontrunner with West Hardin. Returning eight starters on both sides should also give the Bobcats a distinct advantage in experience. Aaron Cook, Franklin Smith and Trey Dickerson, who of which two are juniors, are expected to the top contributors on both sides of the ball. The strong asset for the Bobcats will be defense. The depth in the defensive backfield should help with plenty of passing situations but it will be crucial for Hull-Daisetta to make a big improvement in the front lines. The difference between the Bobcats winning and losing the district title hinges on whether the front lines can produce and whether the offense, eeven with a solid passing game, can work through the running game.

The race for third will be between the Evadale Rebels and Sabine Pass Sharks. For Sabine Pass, it will be important that they can carry over the momentum of last season's surprising overall results. Experience and execution is one of the biggest advantages that Jason Thibodeaux's squad has going for them in 2007. If the Sharks can capitalize on those two things, look for another big surprise and sleeper season out of Sabine Pass. Look for Korey Arceneaux to have a potentially big breakout season on the defensive side of the ball.

Evadale has two things going for them in the race for third. The first thing would be the experience the squad gained on the playoff appearance. And the second would be the prescence of a strong junior class making their ways through Mark Williams' system. One key player to watch is the improving game of RB/LB Justin Crain as the Rebels get a vvast majority of their offensive and defensive trench workers back into the picture. If the juniors of Evadale can live up to their expectations and make improvements on last season, the Rebels may surprise many this season.
