Texas HS Football Preview Guide 2007

Preview Guide 2007

Texas HS Football Chief Editor

The big observation about the 18-4A outlook is quite possibly one that gives the impression that underappreciation and respect for the teams within the district come hand in hand and expected from all angles. With six of the district's seven teams finishing above .500 overall for the year, one could say that it is a very good and competitive district. And that sentiment would be the correct assumption. Within the district, there are several early commits and top notch players to key an eye out for. And now that Brenham graduated several key stars from its 11-2 squad, can anyone find a way to knock them off in 2007?

Despite losing Jarrett Lee, Brandon Collins, Ahmard Howard and Shawn Sullivan to LSU, Texas and Nebraska, the Brenham Cubs are expected to be a major playoff force in the 2007 season. And despite losing a major bulk of its defensive strongholds, it is the defense that should be the strength of the Cubs. LB Kyle Mangan, Ryan Roberson and CB Kendrick Washington, all with Division I type talent, should be the key leaders of this year's defense. All three are also expected to find some time on the offensive side of the ball. Roberson and Washington will be assisting Lester Ward in the backfield as Justin Bennet, Trimaine Mathis man the air raid landing pads. But of all the positions on the field, it is the offensive line that should be getting the praise and attention. The Cubs have two of the most talented linemen in the state in Luke Poehlmann and junior Darion Broadnax. Look for the offense to take form in the skill areas rather quickly if this offensive line can match last year's stellar performance.

Second and thiird place in the 18-4A race should be a three-horse race between Huntsville, Caney Creek and Montgomery. The favored team to grab the second place spot should be the Montgomery Bears. Despite losing some key skill players, do not expect the Bears to simply fall down off the district playoff chase. They do return one of the state's top recruits in Boston College commit Xavier Webb. Webb in 2006 passed for over 1,900 yards and rushed for nearly 900 more yards combining for 29 touchdowns. Repeating that feat may or may not be a tall order for the 5'11, 200 pound quarterback, but do not be surprised if, with a new set of skill players, the Bears and Webb get back to where they left off.And while Montgomery, may not have the biggest or best team in the district, they could be the most dangerous team out there.

Huntsville should find signifcant improvement and finally find a way to crack the Texas high school football playoff code. On the offensive side, the return of QB Trey Rollins, RB Chris Thomas and WR Howard Brown gives the Hornets a much needed boost and experience that could prove to be the difference between making and missing the post-season. Do not be surprised if Thomas winds up doubling his production. Defensively, the Hornets will be looking for leadership and solid aggressive play from DE Kirby Ennis and S Trevor Brazil. Ennis should be making a rotated switched between the end position and outside linebacker. Brazil, before its all said and done could be the MVP of the Hornet roster and pave the way to playing Saturday afternoons.

Counting Caney Creek out of the playoff picture after the surprise deep run the Panthers gave everyone last season could be costly. Now Glenn Hill's squad must prove to everyone that they are more than a one-hit wonder on the airwaves. The return of dual-threat quarterback Joe Simmons and the offensive line should help the Panthers make decent run in district play. Junior WR Tyler Bynum, who is also starting as a defensive back, should see significant increase in production this season on both sides of the ball. And speaking of the defense for the Caney Creek Panthers, LB Kyle Rogers and DB Terrance Griffin are two players that are going to be counted on to give a taste of what the Panthers accomplished late in the season during the playiff run last season. Outside of the explosive skill sets, look for an improved offensive line to make plenty of noise.

For Waller and Livingston to make themselves available for playoff contention, staying healthy and and limiting mental errors is essential. Both teams do have the capability to make a playoff push and are expected to change their late season fortunes and blues in some way or fashion. Key players for Livingston includes LB Issac Crawford, DL Corey Dickerson and WR/DB Jake Rowe. Expected contributors on the Waller Bulldog roster includes DT Eddie Brown and DE Jerrod Jefferson.
