Texas HS Football Preview Guide 2007

Preview Guide 2007

One thing about this district that makes it interesting is the fact that it is a district that is seemlngly has a lots of respect in a powerhouse-heavy region. Of the district's three playoff teams in 2007, only the Jefferson Bulldogs managed to get out of the first round. One thing to expect from this district in 2007 is a much more competitive atmosphere. Can the Jefferson Bulldogs make the next step and go deeper into the playoffs, ultimately becoming a sleeper in the regional picture? Can Harleton make a repeat effort as district champion? And which team will rise from the middle of an already crowded but hungry pack?

One thing that district favorite Jefferson has that makes them attractive in the early pre-season polls is their speed, experience and talent. The return of QB David Williams should help level the loses the Bulldogs suffered to graduation. Williams, a dual-threat quarterback, posted identical numbers on the ground and in the air last season. But he is not the only star offensive player on the field. Also back in the fold is RB Calvin Smith. SMith in 2006 rushed for 776 yards on 122 carries picking up six touchdowns. On the line, look for tackle R.J. Mauldin to become a key centerpiece of Jefferson's offensive success. Defensively, the Bulldogs have plenty of depth on the lines and up front. While some youth is there, they do have solid speed and experience to get into the opposition's frame of mind. LB Tyler Jones, who gobbled up 63 tackles a year ago, will be the standout player in the skill areas of the defense.

Second place should be Harleton's spot to lose. As the defending district title, the bullseye is squarely on the Wildcat uniform. Despite the losses, the WIldcats should be a very big threat offensively. QB Clay Oney, WR Quentin Morrow and TE Josh Salmon all come back for their senior seasons. RB Reggie WIlliams is expected to get plenty of touches and could be a big difference maker on the offensive side. If the offense can carry a young defense into the middle of the season, the Wildcats may have a shot a repeating as a district champion.

Third place should come betwen the New Diana Eagles, Harmony Eagles and Union Grove Lions. With a senior dominated squad and one of the state's top offensive linemen prospects returning, the New Diana Eagles may find themselves in the mist of a run for playoff contention. The strength of this squad should in the trenches with THSF Top 200 lineman Terry McDaniel and Chad Hitt providing the blocking and tackling skills on both sides of the ball. Jake Hendricks and Kaleb Hensley should be able to provide more support in the linebacking and defensive back cores. Offensively, Caleb Ferrell will be the featured back as Chris Moore returns to handle the controls of the offense. And Kyle Hendricks, who is a nice possesion receiver, comes back for his senior campaign as well. If Hendricks can work on his speed at the wideout position, he just might see a chance to play at the next level.

Harmony will be in their second season under head coach Shane Wilson. For Wilson, the offense will be the key to whether the Eagles are flying into the playoffs or sitting in the nest on the outside looking in. Kirk Parsons and Joe Ross are expected to possibily spit time at the quarterback position with Parsons as the likely starter. Adam James, who is the top offensive player on the team, will be sitting in at the running back slot as Ricky Lawrence and Steven Strochstein man the wide out slots. Defensively, the Eagles will need plenty of work and improvement if they expect to challenge for a playoff spot and possibly a district title. And again, Adam James will be the key leader of the Eagle defense from the linebacker position. If there is consistency in the middle of the field for the Eagles, it could mean the difference between third and fourth place.

Union Grove is probably the most unlikely of the three contenders for the third and final playoff spot. The Lions are relatively young on both sides of the ball but there is plenty of hope as they have solid talent waiting in the wings in the skill sets. Junior Josh Carnes is quite possibly the best defensive player on the team and best defensive back in the district. If Carnes can help the players around him become better players fundamentally and lead by example, don't be surprised to see an up and coming Union Grove team in the playoff mix.
