Texas HS Football Preview Guide 2007

Preview Guide 2007

The McCallum Knights have become a standard staple atop the district race and will continue to hold that honor for yet another year. The question is not whether someone can challenge the Knights but who will lay claim to the final two playoff spots in the 2007 season?

Until someone knocks them down, the McCallum Knights should be the team to beat and the team that should be favorite to win the district. The question for the Knights is whether or not they can take the next step in the playoffs. With that hope, offensively, the return of Kevin Lusson at the quarterback position should ease the tension. With solid protection and depth up front, including the services of Josh Goodlow, Lusson should have an easier time finding his potential targets. But, offense for the Knights is not the big question mark. It is on the defensive side of the ball. There should be good size but still a fairly young defensive line with a lot of potential to make the big play. If the Knights carry the momentum of district play into the playoffs, then they could be a solid regional sleeper.

Second place in the district appears to be headed for a showdown between Elgin and Johnson. The Elgin Wildcats have a brand new head coach in Danny Lauve, formerly the head man at Class 3A Jasper. The Wildcat offense features a dual-threat quarterback in Tyler Swenson and two-way starter Derrick Falke. But look for WR Russell Kelley to have a break out senior season. The question about the Wildcats is on defense despite having good talent and experience in key areas of the field. If the defense can play to its potential and sustain the losses, this group may be able to contend for the district title.

The Johnson Jaguars could be the team that surprises many this season. With a load of experience and talent surrounding the team, it is possible to see this team contending for second and possibly getting an outside shot at district powerhouse McCallum. If the Jags rushing attack can improve, along with their offensive lines, then we may see an improved district with better competition. The key for Johnson is to improve the defense and avoid shootouts. Expect DE Rickey Cavanaugh to have a break out season and LB Kerry Hyder to emerge out of the shadows. If these two can find a way to become proven leaders and bring lots of energy to the team, then a playoff berth could be a lock.

One of the big sleepers in the district may come from the Crockett Cougars. If the Cougars can manage the offensive game plan correctly and utilize Darrell Cantu-Harkless to a bigger role, the Cougars may have something special brewing over the next couple years. The Cougar offense should be much improved and experienced with the return of Zach Bosier and a majority of the offensive line. Look for the offense to be the team's biggest strength. On the other side of the ball, the Cougars are faced with a similar senario. A nice mix of youth and experience including LB Mychal Williams and DE Kevin Park.

Another team looking to make its way back into the playoff hunt after missing it by a game is the Travis Rebels. There should be some improvement in the way this team plays with an experienced line and the return of key skill players such as Kyle Godbolt and Armando Roman. Look for a number of players on the Rebel roster to play both offensively and defensively, but become very productive in doing so. The Travis Rebels are expected to have an impact into the district race. But to what extend will be left up to the motivation of the players on the roster.
