Texas HS Football Preview Guide 2007

Preview Guide 2007

The agony of defeat and the thrill of victory are literally hairs apart. The Tennessee Titans found out in the Super Bowl against the Rams a few years ago. Now the Robinson Rockets can certainly relate to that testament. Now its a brand new season and the road back can only seem to be a lot longer. WIth the loss of Randy Kitchens to Rice, many wonder and ponder the question of how the Rockets will blast into the 2007 season. Who will step up and give the Rockets a challenge at the top of the ladder? With fierce competition on the horizon, just how tough will this district become and what lies ahead for the playoff future?

Until someone knocks them down in this district, the Robinson Rockets should be considered as the favorite. Offensively, although Brian Lewis loses a quarterback, he will still have a load of talent and experience to build upon into this season. Look for a dual rushing attack of Seth Mogavero and Keenan Alford to begin to take form early in the year. With depth up front, the transition for the running game and the new quarterback should be rather smooth. The defense led by DE Levi Kirkland will have to be a defense that will need to grow into its new identity faairly quickly. Overall, don't expect much of a drop off to the Rockets success in district play.

The key question of the district is not whether Robnson can maintain their stay at the top, but who will come in and challenge them at the top. All signs point to a horse race between the La Vega Pirates and China Spring Cougars for the second spot in the district race with the Connally Cadets edging close behind. La Vega should be a team that looks to be a staple in the district race for some time. This season, the strength of the Pirates will and should be felt on the defensive side of the ball. William Henry and Michael Bigelow at linebacker should be the key to La Vega's success on defense and are probably the best one-two defensive player combo in the district. Offensively, La Vega's rushing attack featuring the Parr brothers, Kourtney and Chris, shuld be in line to do bigger things than last season when the duo ran for a combined 2,400 plus yards. If the Pirates offensive line can keep pace, then this Pirate team could have something special brewing.

China Spring has the potential to create havoc and match up problems with many teams and could be a big sleeper and surprise to many on a regional and statewide level. With one of the top returning quarterbacks in the state and a receiver with the potential to be one of the top recruits in the Class of 2009, the Cougars may be on the verge of having a break out season. China Spring's sucess this season could hinge on the defense. If the defensive efforts improve to the way it was prior to district play last year, then the Cougars will possibly see a solid run late in the season.

The Connally Cadets could have the potential to pull off some very big surprises and could hold the cards and the keys to the district race. With an already solid nucleus on offense including Dexter Fulbright at the fullback position and Chris Cobb at the wideout position, the Cadets should not have trouble finding what type of reliability they will place on the defense. Defensively, look for Aston Love and Chazz Cuffee to produce on the ends and be the leaders of the squad. The key for Connally is to find consistency in its production both offensively and defensively.
