The 17-2A race last season ended up with New Boston, Hooks and Paul Pewitt on top and in the playoffs. Can the trio hang on to the top of the district ladder despite having lost several key players from last year's squad? Who from last year's middle of the pack group can step up into the playoff race for this season? As they have said last season in with virtually every district in 2A Region III, expect the unexpected among the heavyweights, contenders and pretenders. The same sentiment may hold true for this district and the rest of the region in 2007.
Hughes Springs may be the one team that may become the biggest regional sleeper in 2007 and could very well be be the new favorite for the 17-2A crown this season. The Mustangs should see a much improved defense as they return nine of the eleven starters from last year's squad. Look for players such as Lane Teel, Jarrod McKinney, Jabbari Wesley and Judson Morgan to become key contributors for Chris Edwards' defense. But if the defense is to improve the Mustangs will have to ignore the hype, play their game and stick to the fundamentals of the game. On offense, most of the Mustangs skill players are back. Teel, who rushed for over 750 yards a year ago, should see a bigger production and bigger offensive role. Wesley and McKinney should also see some significant playing time out of the backfield alongside Teel.
A staple in the regional playoff picture and in the district, the Brahmas of Paul Pewitt expect to be at the top each and every year. This season is no different than any other despite the loss of key players on the roster. This year's squad will be relying on the offensive and defensive lines to help get them back on top. And as is the case traditionally with the Brahmas, look for a strong running prescence to help lift the offense. This year look for sophomore D.J. Burleson and senior Cole Smith to share the duties in the backfield. If this team plays the way coach Brian Huckabay expects them to play week in week out, expect the Brahmas to right at the top of the district standings.
Last season, youth and inexperience took its toll on a young Linden-Kildare Tigers squad in district play. Now that the Tigers have grown a little and had a taste of the phyisical output of the district race, look for this year's squad to return the favor and step into a possible playoff contention. Like that of Paul Pewitt, the Tigers will mainly rely on the rushing attack to get them through the grind. The district's leading returning rusher, Dekori Lawson, who ramped up 1,580 yards and 18 touchdowns, will once again be handed the reigns of running the ball down the field. Lawson will be joined by Greg Gaston at quarterback and Devondrick Darty at running back in the backfield. And speaking of Darty, expect him to become one of the key to the Tigers defense. If the Tiger defense can play to its potential and the offense grinds out the clock on the offensive side of the ball, look for positive things to happen in Linden come early November.
Daingerfield is a sexy pick in the eyes of many this year mainly because of its potential on the defensive side of the ball. Defense is in fact the strength of the Tigers in 2007. But the question about the Daingerfield Tigers is how far can the defense carry the offense? James Davis, Julius Hurndon and Jarred Hill are expected to carry the load for the Tiger defense. On the offensive side look for Johnnie Hurndon, Hill and Malcolm Walker to provide most of the production. The key for the offense may be up front with James Davis and Payton Hall. If the Tigers can stay focused on the tradition and game plan, then look for this team to play the contender card.
Although both New Boston and Hooks are young, have a bulleye on their back and expect to be back in the playoff hunt, don't expect these two teams to lay down fo any team. Tasting the playoff atmosphere is one thing, but the grind through the district schedule is yet another. New Boston has experience in key areas such as the receiving core and other spot positions, but they will be expected to help groom a young Janzen Carr into the quarterback position in a hurry. If Carr can adjust to a full time varsity load, the Lions may find some surprising results on the scoreboard.
The Hornets return the second leading returning rusher in the district in Jeremy Pree and they do have a fairly decent offensive line. Pree and the rest of the offense will have to play ball control on a consistent basis. If they can do that, expect a defense that returns zero starters from last year's 10-3 squad to become fairly good and gain some confidence. The defensive players will have to learn how to zero in a focus quickly if tis year's Hooks squad has a shot at repeating what it accomplished last season. |
