Among the changes in the district in the offseason, Wolfe City absorbed the brunt of the changes and could still be a dominate force in 2007. Despite losing their head coach, their quarterback and their top running back, the Wolves will be seeking to keep the rest of the district in check. Can a promising young Cumby squad make a move into the district picture? And can the Celeste Blue Devils find their way back to the championship form from a few years ago?
The district favorite should be the Boles Hornets. With Wolfe City's Jonathan Price now graduated, the district top returning rusher belongs to the Hornets and sophomore Joe Gilliard. Gilliard as a freshman in 2006 rushed for nearly 1,300 yards and touched football's promised land 21 times. With an experienced line and a big bulk of starters coming back, Gilliard will have plenty of help. Up front with plenty of protection as Keegan Rees and Bryan Cleveland look to secure the offemsive side of the trenches. Quarterback Daniel Sanchez is also back along with fullback Robert Liebel. Defensively, the Hornets will be looking for Liebel and Kelly Dodson to bring plenty of leadership and flare to rest of the troops. Expect to see a vastly improved defense by the Hornets in 2007.
The team that is expected to give the Hornets a big challenge in the district race andis expected to be a very big darkhorse in the regional picture is that of the Cumby Trojans. A big reason the Trojans will be much improved centers around the developement and production of Brixx Hawthorne. Although just a sophomore, Hawthorne has shown his poise and ability to make the big play. Now the young quarterback must show he can help lead the Trojans into playoff contention and into the chase for the district title. Joining Hawthorne on the offensive side of the ball is Nathan Dunnihoo at running back. On the defensive side, look for Kris Stamford to be the key leader.
The Wolfe City Wolves should be a solid lock for the third and final playoff spot in the district, but they must find a way to replace stars Jonathan Price and Case Roundtree. Do not expect much change in the way the Wolves play ball as the new head coach is a promoted assistant coach. Filling the void at running back will be James King. King will at least have some experience up front as B.K. Scott returns to man the front lines. On the defensive side, the Wolves must be very effective and give the Wolves a chance to continue their stay atop the district. Scott and Emmanuel Akers should be the keys to the defense this season in Wolfe CIty.
Despite being relatively young, the Celeste Blue Devils have a good mix of experience on its roster. Most of the experience for MIke Lipsey's squad will come from the trenches where players such as Zach Willeford, Alex Cawthon and Keenan Butler reside. In turn, the younger players should get a golden opportunity to gain some valuable time on the field. The key offensive and defensive skill players such as Justin Wright, Fritz Vale, and Joey Brock will need to grow into their positions and produce at a rather smooth pace. If this team has its stars aligned correctly, they could be a very dangerous sleeper and spoiler in the district race. |
