The Lufkin Panthers in 2006 did what was expected of them in terms of regular season play. But then after cruising in their first playoff contest, the wheels fell off against the Dragons. But unlike the previous two seasons where Lufkin's season was halted by Southlake Carroll, a different colored and different regional dragon in Round Rock came to shock the world. Among the other surprising storylines of the 2006 season in this district was the rise of College Park in their very first varsity season to the playoffs. After making a national televison appearance last season on ESPN2, can The Woodlands faces a tougher challenge against new cross-town rival College Park and Lufkin? And can Oak Ridge make a repeat appearance in the playoffs by outlasting Conroe and Magnolia?
As expected, Lufkin should find its ways through the district schedule with ease despite having to face another reloading season. The return of Trevon Lewis at the running back position should help smooth the offense in the right direction with the departure of Jaeremy Claybon. Lewis as a sophomore garnered up just over 700 yards on just under a hundred yards. Taking Jeremy Claybon's spot should be Claybon's younger brother Jeffery. He will be joined in the wideout positions by James Davis and Eric Johnson, who should give the Panther offense some stability to wor with. Defensively, Jamarcus McFarland is expected to carry the load for a defense ready to find a new identity and ready to seek revenge for last season's playoff loss. Also expected to be a key contributor is Darius Terry. If the Panthers can maintain the solid tradion and strengthen its defense early in the season, this team could be a statewide sleeper.
Second place could be an intriguing one between and up and coming College Park team and an always tough Woodlands program.Last season's surprising playoff appearance by Richard Carson's squad should be a very interesting sign of things to come in the near future, this year included. With a solid nucleus in the front lines of both sides, the Cavaliers have a golden opportunity to develope the skill position players at a consistent and quick manner. Robert Gilmore and Kevin Fenter on the defensive side, have great size and speed to be considered a Division I type athetes. But the duo will have to keep the linebakckers and defensive back in check if they intend to keep the doors open for at least a second place finish. On the offensive side, the Cavs have quite possibly on of the region's best kept secrets in fullback David Crittenden.
The Woodlands, given enough time with the younger players, could be a team that may also play into the late season as a tough and hungry group. Depth at offensive line with Brandon Thompson and Chad Linsey should give rusher Tracy Milo a chance to approach another 1,000 yard season. Rebuilding a nearly depleted defense should be the number one priority. If this team can work its way back up defensively, the Highlanders should be a hand full late in the year. Despite the youth and inexperience that surrounds the team, the Highlanders are expected to and should finish in the playoffs.
Fouth could come betwwen the Conroe Tigers and Oak Ridge War Eagles. Last season for the Tigers is quite possibly a season that they would very much like to see erased from the record books, but should give this season's group a huge lesson and motivation to remain focused in district play. With a dual rushing threat in Lou Greenwood and Draylon Booker plus a solid offensive line, the pieces to rid themselves of the bad taste late in th eyar last year. Defensively, look for some significant improvement as the Tigers look to linebacker Blake Cavil and defensive back Mookie Lewis for support.
Counting out Oak Ridge in the race could be a mistake given that this group, despite the heavy losses to graduation, could put the pieces together at a moments notice. It will be mightly important for the War Eagles to stay healthy and be very consistent in its production. Key players to watch includes LB Chase Daniel, QB aaron Dunahoe, and DL Tevin Henderson. |
