Texas HS Football Preview Guide 2007

Preview Guide 2007

The District 1-4A race may be headed into a very interesting one in 2007 after Chapin head coach Daren Walker left for 5A Franklin and several stud athletes graduated and left for Division I schools. Most notable names headed out for Division I school is Andre Jones from Andress going to Texas, Stephen Skelton of Burges headed for Fordham, Dominique Hamilton of Chapin going to Missouri. As for the Chapin head coaching change, don't expect much of a drop off. Defensive Co-Ordinator Rene Hernandez was promoted to take Walker's place.

The big assumption of the district that it will be considerably weaker than it has been in the last couple years, but that may not be the case with a more competitive atmosphere in the season ahead. The two-headed monster in Andress and Chapin got hit hard with graduation but expect to see the two at the top of the mountain in the end. The big question is who will be looking to step up and take a whack out of the dual dominance? Austin, Burges and Jeffereson all can plead a case as to why they are that team. Do not be surprised to see the entire district race be undecided with one week to go.

The Chapin Huskies, until someone knocks them down in the district, should be the favorite to win it again. The strength of the Huskies will be felt in the trenches, as they have been over the last few years. With plenty of depth, discipline and talent, there is no reason this year's lines at Chapin High can help the younger skill players groom into their positions. Keep an eye out for Julian Gomez at the center spot and Buldon Garcia at the guad spot. Looking to split time between tight end, offensive line and receiver will be junior Darnelle Spears. The line should give RB Brandon Copeland plenty of yards and space to work with.

Andress will be relying on their defense to carry the load early on and possibly through the remainder of the season. If the young offense can work out the early season kinks, Andress could be even better than anyone could expect. But again, in order to give the offense plenty of work, the defense will have to do its job. Key players to be on the lookout for at Andress includes DBs Troy Knight, Jamar Johnson and Patrick Chambers and LB Michael Swift.

The battle for third with Austin, Burges and Jefferson could spill out into the upper echelon of the district race. The Burges Mustangs will be looking to make a return trip into the post-season with most of its key starters back and like Chapin and Andress, the strength of the team will be on the defensive side. If games are close, Marteen Kekoffs will be the go to guy for the Mustangs in clutch situations. Expect Matt McBain to have a breakout junior season on the defensive line.

The Austin Golden Panthers will bring back 16 of 21 starters in 2007 including most of its skill players. The key player on both sides of the ball for the Golden Panthers could be Mark Burns, who will be sitting in at tight end and defensive end. On the other side of the ball, Larry Hernandez at the same two positions could be a solid compliment to the Panther attacks. Size and speed may not be the Panthers best asset, but if they can keep the fundamentals simple and at a premium, this group could have something special this season.

Jefferson may have the biggest climb of the possible contenders to get into the playoffs, but this group does have some talent that may give them a chance to make things interesting in the middle and a chance to play a major spoiler role in the district race. Expect RB Edgar Robles to see his production possibly double from last year's 330+ yard rushing season. The question mark for Jeffersoon could be on the defensive side of te ball. If the offense stays on the field with timed possesion, then the Silver Foxes could find themselves in the mix early. Depth at key positions could be the biggest factor in Jefferson's chances.

Do not expect for Irvin, Bowie and El Paso High to simply surrender easily this season. All three of those teams could have the same hopes as Jefferson and all three could be just as dangerous into critical stages of the game and season.
