The questions about this district in 2007 surrounds whether or not the Clint Lions are a one year, one hit wonder or they are here to stay as a competitive team at or near the top? Who will step up into the fold from the middle of the pack? Can Monahans maintain their stay atop the district mountain?
Last season, the Clint Lions emerged out of the district as somewhat of a surprise by posting a 9-2 record. But the past history of the Lions became somewhat of a pure lesson with competitiveness. In recent years, the Lions were competing as a small school in the 4A level against the likes of Riverside and Parkland. Now that they are grouped up with schools within their size bracket, competition and success has found its way through "The Den". The district and the Clint Lions still had their fair share of competition as Monahans and Fort Stockton continued their winning ways.
Making a return to the Lions this season is the reigning and projected Defensive MVP in Anthony Aguilar. If Aguiilar can return to form as he was last season, and players such as Manny Rodriguez and Danny Soto play to the way they are capable of playing, then the sky is the limit to what this team can accomplish in the 2007 season. With solid athletes and awareness, the Clint Lions may just find themselves back in the middle of a district championship picture.
The one team the Lions will have to knock off is the defending district champion Monahans Loboes. The return of Clay Anthony and a workhorse along the trenches should give Mickey Owens' squad a good shot at repeating. Expect the Loboes to use the lines to tire out the opposition on both sides of the ball. On the offensive side, QB Steven Valles is expected to take the reigns along with Steven Neel and Jorge Arriola in the backfield.
Fort Stockton will be counting on the experience of Sergio and Rene Corral to get them back into the playoffs. What this squad lacks in size and overall depth they make up for it with experience, speed and heart. The strength of the Panthers will be felt along the trenches and on the defensive side of the ball. If Tom Howard's defense can control the opposition on a consistent level, then the Panthers may have a chance to go more than one or two rounds in the playoffs.
The team that is looking to knock one of the three powers off its feet would be the Pecos Eagles. On the offensive side of the ball, Pecos will have quarterback Paul Zubeldia returning with a supporting cast of WR Hector Ramirez and a decent offensive line. Over on the opposite side of the ball the Eagles could have a deense that is a real sleeper with a decent amount of talent including Martin Jasso, Wayne Sparkman and Drake Bradley.
Fabens, Antony and Tornillo should all be significantly improved with experience and all three could play a big role as spoiler in an already interesting district. If the three teams can get through the season without depth becoming an isue and can stay healthy, the district race could be even more fun to watch this season. Fabens will be turning to its offense to get out of a 2-8 hole it had created for themselves last season while Anthony looks to captialize on ts success from a year ago. If the Wildcat defense can hold its own this season, lok for Anthony to become a pleasant sleeper and spoiler in the district race |
