The perception of this district in the eyes of many is that it is a one team district with a team destined to win a state championship. The perception is only partially true with Royse City's experience and play on the field. What many may or may not realize is that teams such as Quinlan-Ford, Wills Point and Emory Rains have a stake in this district as well. This district by years end could have four and possibly five very solid playoff caliber teams in it. So, just whch one of these playoff-caliber teams in the district will give the Royse City Bulldogs a run for their money?
Royse City has the potential to roll through their regular season schedule, make a deep run and possibly make a run at the state championship. The return most of its skill players and an 11-2 record last season is a big reason the Bulldogs have the early season hype. Now they must find a way to live up to that hype. One of the big offseason moves for the Bulldogs is moving Richard Morrison from a part time role to a full time role after spliting duties with Bert Boudreaux last season. Boudreaux will now be focusing on wideout duties full time after spliting time at quarterback last season. Other key players on the offensive side for Morrison to fire at includes Carlos Gallegos and Kollin Padon. Padon will also be serving as the team's kicker and punter. Defensively, look for Tim Obermier, Jermaine McKinney and Jeremiah Martinez to be the key leaders at their repective positions on the field. Obermier, in the defensive backfield, is the team's top returning defensive player. Overall, the defense is an experienced one but still a very young one at that. Expect this team team to gain more momentum as the season progresses.
If there is any team that will be able to give Royse City a run for their money in district play, look for the Quinlan-Ford Panthers to be the team that fulfills that distinct possibility. After being one of the big surprises in 3A last season, the Panthers will also be looking to prove that they are no one-hit wonder on the Texas high school football record label charts. Offensively, the return of Michael Enriquez at the QB position should help. Enriquez will have some targets in the air as Ronald Coker and Corey Saunders come back for their senior seasons. Solid size and some experience will help the Panther offense dig through. Defensively, the Panthers will hoping good size up front and a hungry linebacking core brings success once again. Look for players such as Alan Crocker and Dallas Keck to be the key leaders and playmakers of the defensive side. If the Panthers can avoid the shoot out from a defensive stand point, then expect this squad to pull more big surprises this season.
Third in the district will likely come down to either Emory Rains or Wills Point. But do not rule out the possibility of Commerce making a run into the picture. The Wills Point Tigers Of the team's 16 returning starters, 14 are returning starters. Out of the Tiger I Formation, look for a strong running game to come from LaHendrick Quails and Austen Brewer. But expect the Tigers to find a good chuck of air time too with Revio Hickmon and Steven Cunigan. The strength of the WIlls Point Tigers is likely the defense with Hickmo, Brewer and Chris Pruitt becoming the key holdovers. If this Tiger squad can stay healty and win the games they are capable of winning, then expect a solid lock in the playoffs.
Emory Rains will be turning to the experience and defensive play of Casey Paris, Colby Hoover and Jake Ferguson. Paris at defensive tackle is probbably the best player on the Wildcat roster. Junior Taylor Marshall is expected to contribute on both sides of the ball and at multiple positions including quarterback, safety and wide receiver. If the Wildcats and Ken Little can manage to sustain the losses on the offensive side of the ball and get the ball rolling quickly with his youth, then look for Rains to contend. But if the offense struggles late in the year, thus wearing down the defense, look for it to be a long year.
Commerce is a team that could potentially play a najor role in the way the district race turns out. WIth an improving offense that includes dual threat quarterback Bobby Draughn, the Tigers are going to need to make sure they play fundamentally sound. If the Comerce Tigers are expected to contend, defensively, they must play more sound and focused one play at a time. Look for Derek Johnson at linebacker to be the key leader of the defensive unit. |
