With the Texas high school fooball world focused on most of 2A Region III, and a pair of Region I districts, it could be easily forgotten that 10-2A is possibly one of the tougher districts in the state. Maybe even the most underrated and forgotten district in all of Class 2A. Four of the six teams in the district in 2006 finished with .500 or batter overall records, two of the teams in the district have made long playoff runs and one has a state championship appearance to its credit last season.
At the top of the district, the Cisco Loboes, will be looking to make its way back into the state championship picture. With a strong offensive line, linebacking core and several key skill players back into the fold, the Cisco Loboes could very well on their way back to a repeat of last season. Defense with the Loboes should be the big strength and key to their success. The return of Caleb Sellers, Jory Hernandez and Josh Bridges, should help get the defense on the right track rather quickly. If the defense does it's job, allows the offense to produce, with a new quarterback and a strong running game, expect the Loboes to be right back where they were last season.
The Boyd Yellow Jackets, another hungry regional power, made it to the state semifinals last season in Division I. And in a lot of ways, this Yellow Jacket team is very similar to that of its district rival Cisco. With the way the district playoff picture is shaping up, it is a possibility that the two rivals will face one another twice in the same season. Boyd will house the stadiums with possibly the district's top rusher in Jeremy Sessums. Sessums could be seen as a legit threat on the ground and in the air coming out of the backfield. With a strong a running game, the Yellow Jackets will be turning, like that of Cisco, to their offensive line for many of the answers to the puzzle. On defense, J.G. Cartwright's squad will be turning to D1 propect Adam Lambert for a way to stop the opposition and the Cisco dominance.
Third place should come betwen the improving Godley Wildcats and Paradise Panthers. Both the Wildcats and Panthers will going through the season with a good mix of experience and youth. They key for both teams in whether or not they grab the third place slot in the district race, contend with Boyd at Cisco at the top, or play spoiler on the outside looking in, is to make sure that the experienced players on the teams become a solid stepping stone for the younger players. If the younger players grow up fast, some bright things could be headed in the direction of both teams.
Godley's trip into the playoffs and into playoff contention could be the one thing that changes or alters the landscape of the 2A regional playoff picture. With decent size on the lines and the return of Clay Evans at quarterback, the Wildcats may have a chance to finally crack the playoff code. If Tyler Copeland and Ryan Ingram can improve out of the backfield, look for this squad to become a very big district sleeper in the eyes of many. Defensively, a player to keep an eye out for is DL/LB Jake Williams. Williams, a sophomore, has emerge as one of the team's biggest leaders and playmakers.
Paradise will be looking to maintain their hold onto the district playoff picture. The Panthers will be counting on several key two-way stars to help get them back into the playoffs including, RB/LB Nick Pike, OL/DE Zach Strand, WR/DB Bryson Mack and QB/DB P.J. Fuller. Fuller will be stepping into the role of full time QB1 after three year starter Josh Erwin graduated. Pike could be one of the best athletes in the district and expect his offensive production start to mirror his defensive efforts. If Pike can help improve the defense and make a strong contribution offensively, look for Paradise to finish third and a few looks in the direction himself in the recruiting scene. |
