Texas HS Football Preview Guide 2006

Team Preview - SA Central Catholtic Buttons
TAPPS Division I District 2
By Christopher Lyke
Texas HS Football Chief Editor

The Central Catholic Buttons will be looking to make a return to the TAPPS Playoffs after missing out in 2005. With a solid core of the defense having plenty of experience. The tradition of the Central Catholic program has set the Buttons on a very solid standard and expectation. If they can keep their goals and expectations within the program standards, the sky is the limit to what this group can accomplish.

Starting with the offense, quarterback Pat Dickinson should find a bigger role and better chance to succeed if he is able to utilize his weapons properly. With a stacked group of talented rushers behind him, his game as a junior will only improve to greater heights. Rick Gutierrez, Seth Hanna, Tate Gonzalez and CA Garza should all find multiple ways to contribute whether it is blocking, rushing or receiving. With a loaded backfield, Dickinson should not find progress and timing as a major issue.

Look for WR Brett Vessell to have a break out season in 2006 after a 30+ reception season of 440 yards in 2005. If the running game is effective, not only will Dickinson find a major boost in his game, Vessell's production may be just as effective. But that will largely depend on how much dedication Jerry Campos and Evan Dannhardt find in their play.

The key to Central Catholic's success in 2006 should be the experienced front line and middle defense. Leadership and experience should be the overriding theme for the Buttons. What the Buttons lack in size, should be made up in skill and execution on the field during the game and in practice. The top player for the Button defense could be LB David Williams. Williams's explosive speed and ability to tackle should be a guiding light to the rest of the squad.

The bottom line for Central Catholic will be execution on both sides of the ball. They do have the experience and the leaders that are necessary to be a very dangerous team late in the year. The early season contest with the Harlandale Indians should be a measuring stick to where they must be by the time district play rolls around on October 14.
