| District 22-5A Preview |

The North Shore Invitational as they call it nowadays, should see no change in the status quo as far as the Mustangs getting derailed in district play. As an added footnote, it is expected that Deer Park and La Porte will be creeping in right behind North Shore in the standings. And with the additional playoff spot, the Pasadena schools will be guaranteed at least one spot. Among the PISD schools likely to see playoff action are the Dobie Longhorns and Memorial Mavericks.
It's no secret that the Galena Park North Shore Mustangs will be one of the key favorites in the regional playoff picture and one of the top teams in the the entire state. The return of Chris Gainous and Marcus Jones will certainly help the cause of the Mustangs. Gainous, the key offensive threat for North Shore, rushed for nearly 1,100 yards in 2005 while waltzing into the endzone 15 times. Do not be surprised if the numbers Gainous has by the end of the year is significantly higher. One of the reasons for that expectation is due to the depth, experience and size of the offensive line. Chris Jackson, Jimmy Garrett and Ralston Dews should all be seeing a future playing on Saturdays.
Defensively the Mustangs will be aiming to get revenge for the second round playoff loss last season. Marcus Jones, Terrance Hall and Josh Morris all are expected to be big contributors and leaders on and off the field. Jones is coming off a junior season where was named as the District Defensive MVP and collecting 68 tackles and eight sacks. Hall and Morris, both linebackers, were named as first team All-District selections in 2005. A key sleeper to watch in the Mustang defense is Chase McEntee at defensive tackle. McEntee is a player with plenty of heart and skill. As the season progresses, look for McEntee to become more and more physical up front.
Deer Park should be a team has a good handle on the playoff picture, but the Deer will be looking at trying to get out of the first round this time around. Offensively, Deer Park is bringing back a talented running back in Jofer Onyechi, who rushed for 781 yards and 10 touchdowns, and they are bringing in a mix of experience and youth with solid depth at the wide receiver spots. It will be the defense of the Deer Park Deer that determines whether they finish second or third. Star defensive back Chris Spretz, who landed a few post-season awards last year, returns for his senior season along with DE Chase Hernandez.
La Porte is a team on the rise and turned plenty of heads after going 10-3 in their first season under Jeff LaReau. For the Bulldogs, it is the offense that is the main attraction due to the retun of two very key skill position players. And with high expectations looming, quarterback Boogie Anagnostou and running back Quentin Castille will be counted on to produce similar results as what they accomplished in 2005. Anagnostou, a two-time District MVP, piled on 2,190 yards and 26 touchdowns passes while Castille did his dirty work on the ground for 1,227 yards and 10 touchdowns. The key for La Porte will be to work off the inexperienced receiving cores. Defensively, expect another strong front as depth and size work in the favor of LaReau's Bulldogs.
Dobie lost its quarterback in the off-season when Sam Proctor transferred to Pearland, but all is not lost for Tommy Kaiser's squad. An improved running game and defense should be enough to help the Longhorns secure at least a fourth place finish in the dstrict standings. The primary running back will be Ryan Thomas, who earned Honorable Mention All-District with 1,003 yards to his credit. And with a new quarterback, there is also an experienced and sizable offensive line. If the offfense can get in sync early, then the Dobie Longhorns will be a sleeper in the district playoff picture.
Memorial went through a coaching change in the ooff-season but expect the Mavericks to be right in contention within the last two weeks of the season. The problem this team may have is the lack of experience in various areas including running back, wide receiver and linebacker. If John Snelson and the Mavericks can overcome these obstacles, they could be a very fun group to watch. |
