| District 21-5A Preview |
|
|
By Christopher Lyke
Texas HS Football Chief Editor
Plenty of off-season moves for a majority of the teams within the district should make the 2006 season all the more interesting. With Spring ISD gone to Region II, Channelview moving up from 4A and Atascocita making its first snaps, plenty of changes are in store. But that is not the only headliner the district brings to the table this season. Port Arthur Memorial has a brand new head coach in Ronnie Thompson, who replaces Dean Colbert. Colbert is now the head coach for the Eagles of Atascocita. And if that isn't enough, one of Colbert's assistants, is the former head coach of the Humble Wildcats, Neal Quillen.
After all the dusts and clouds have settled in, it should be the Humble Wildcats that emerge as the district favorite. Walt Beasley's spread offense should result in some usual fireworks on the scoreboard. With two players that can play the quarterback position and strong offensive line, the Wildcats should see no problem with depth on the offensive side. RB Reggie Brown returns to the team for his senior season after spending time on the shelf last season wile Kijuan Dabney and Kenneth Bowman either split time at quarterback and wide reciever or keep the status quo with Dabney being the main quarterback. Defensively, Cordell Riggins should be assuming the leadership and playmaker roles at linebacker while Daetron McClelland, Broderick Jackson and Darby Jackson look to make a big impact.
West Brook just might see the end of the light and make the district title chase with Humble just a wee bit uncomfortable. With Joe Chaisson and Billy Chavis back on offense, the Bruins will be a very dangerous team to deal with offensively. Chaisson in 2005 combined for 1,700 yards of offense with Chavis being the target of 262 of those yards. The key for West Brook should hinge on the production of a very talented and competitive offensive line. Over on the defensive side, Jacody Coleman, Otis Sowell and Michael Williams enter the 2006 season with a ton of momentum on the shoulders, If the trio can get West Brook's defense back to the level it was late last season, the Bruins could become a very key player in the regional playoff picture as a sleeper.
Herb Minyard enters his third season as head coach of the Baytown Sterling Rangers and unlike his previous two seasons, the depth and experience of the team will be a big bonus in Sterling's playoff chances. A large contributor to the Rangers' possible success in 2006 will be attributed to the depth and size of the offensive lines. running back and at wide reciever. Keith Sweazie, Ty Simmons, Zac Stuart and Miki Partsch along the lines average an amazing 290 pounds and 5.35 on the 40 clock. The size and protection up front should give QB Jason Tanner all the confidence in the world to do what he needs to with the offense. On the flip side of the ball, DE Anthony Gray and DB Tillman Stevens will be counted on to help the defense make some big improvements.
All politics and pressure aside, the Port Arthur Memorial Titans do have a promising group of talented players just waiting to get their feet wet into a giant-sized puddle of water. As Ronnie Thompson takes over as the new head coach, a change in attitude and direction should be in order. Defensively, expect the Titans to feed off DB Barry Valcin for energy and leadership. Valcin, already one of the state's top defensive backs, could end up as a big difference maker in terms of the Titans contending and making the playoffs in 2006. As the spread offense makes it way through Port Arthur on offense, look for QB Davon Lewis to have a very big year providing the rest of the offense stays on the same page.
A sub-par Hurricane Rita shortened season will be an afterthought if the Baytown Lee Ganders can find themselves back in the district playoff chase. With 15 of 22 starters returning including QB Jeremy Moses and DL J.T. Cleveland back, head coach Dick Olin expects improvement. Although the Hurricane activities and graduation took its toll on the depth of the Ganders, there are plenty of skilled players just waiting to show off their talents. Jeremy Moses, who is getting plenty of looks from collegiate programs after the success of Olin's previous quarterbacks over the last decade, enters the 2006 season after throwing for 1,885 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. Size up front should be a be bonus for Moses to buy plenty of time. Defensively, junior J.T Cleveland, DB Ulises Irias and LB Luis Gonzales should all be looking for very good seasons.
Kingwood, Channelview and new school Atascocita will be looking up at the district but all three could be a threat and spoiler when need be. In a district where experience is a necessity, the trio will have to focus on a week by week case and pick the quarter battles before the overall battles kick in. |
