District 7-4A Preview

And just like old times, the Fort Worth ISD District reverts back to its former self from four years ago when the district was split into two zones. Instead of the regular ten team split with five in each zone, it is an uneven split of five in the eastern zone and six in the western zone. Placed in the east were Arlington Heights, Eastern Hills, North Side and O.D. Wyatt. The western zone consists of Carter-Riverside, Dunbar, Polytechnic, South Hills, Trimble Tech and Western Hills.

Under the new zone set up, the top five in each district in week ten will play in a playoff. the two first place teams in each zone will play for the 7-4A District Championship. The second place teams will battle for the right to play in the playoffs while third place teams will play for fifth place and so on down the line. This set up will insure that all but one team in the district will play a guaranteed ten games on the schedule.

East Zone Outlook

Arlington Heights is currently the class of the zone and the district as far as football is concerned. The Yellow Jackets, who finished 7-3 last season, returns a stud running back in Evan Woods. Woods, who finished the 2005 season with just over 800 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns, will have some solid protection up front with the return of Nick Seiken and Oscar Garcia. Expect the Yellow Jackets to run away with the zone championship and earn themselves a shot at the district title.

O.D. Wyatt, like Arlington Heights, returns with a solid offensive line but a rather inexperienced one. The Chaps will be looking to establish a good ground game with the prescence of Ricky Shearin, but expect stud wide out Jeremy Wesley, to get plenty of receptions as well. Wesley in 2005 picked up 350+ yards on 72 receptions, and should be in strong position to grab even more. If the Chaps can put their game together rather nicely, they could give Arlington Heights a serious run at the top.

Eastern Hills will be looking to turn things around despite a heavy hit to graduation. A key player to watch on the Highlanders squad is quarterback Ed Young, who has the ability to not only throw, but he can rush as well.

West Zone Outlook

The Southwest Raiders are expected to be atop the West Zone when it is all said and done. Bringing back a star kicker in Vedran Ceric and perhaps the best returning FWISD defensive player should give the Raiders a major boost on the chase for a district title.

The team that will most likely be in the mix for the zone title against Southwest is Western Hills. Despite returning only five starters off last year's squad, the Cougars should be strong in the rushing department with the return of Chris Meeks. Another offensive gem the Cougars have is Matt Teague. Teague, a three year starter at Western Hills, will be looking to impress more than just the locals with his field performance but college scouts as well.

Dunbar and Carter-Riverside might be in perfect position to pull surprises within the district in 2006. A combined 5-15 in 2005, the two schools will be much improved as Carter-Riverside returns 19 of 22 starters and Dunbar brings back 13 of 22. If the depth and experience triggers in, it is very possible we could see a wild finish to the West Zone standings.
