District 4-4A Preview

With this district being the only district in Class 4A with fewer than six teams, the margin for error could be a very short one when it comes to making and missing the playoffs. Last season, the teams in this district saw three teams go two rounds deep and one reach the state semifinals. The team that reached the state semifinals was the Wolfforth Frenship Tigers. Plainview narrowly missed the same feat in Division I after giving Stephenville everything they could handle and more. Now the Frenship Tigers, have a new highly-touted quarterback and a new head coach. But the Tigers be just as dangerous and possibly even more dangerous than last year's 13-2 squad. Can any of the other four district teams possibly give the Tigers a game?

With Frenship reloading on many cylinders, one may figure this squad could be in for a challenge. It is still a distinct possibility that they could have a serious challenge before the season is over. Replacing Tyler Lyons at quarterback is Seth Doege, who racked in nearly 3,200 yards last season at 2A Crane. Doege's main targets include WR Nick Hanslik, RB Michael Conner and RB Clay West. With a strong offensive line, the Tigers could be even more dangerous than last season. Over on defense, Hanslik is the team's top returning defensive player with over 100 tackles to his credit. Hanslik will be looking to Ryan Haliburton and Aaron Wampler to help pick up the tab at the end positions. If the Tigers return to form as they were last season, it will be in large part to the play of the defense up front and the rushers in the back of the offensive formation.

Plainview, which gave the Tigers their only regular season loss last season, will be looking for a repeat of last season. But they will have to do it with an inexperienced offensive line and without stud Jamar Wall, who is now at Texas Tech. Taking over for Wall, will be his back up Evan Hearn, who amassed for 1,100 yards of offense on the ground and in the air last season. And back at quarterback will be signal caller Adam Thiel. One of the only holdovers from last season's line is Spencer Thompson, who was a big difference maker that allowed Wall to run as good as he did. Look for Thompson to step it up yet again on the trench and help propel the Bulldogs back in position to win another district championship.

Big Spring returns its top collegiate prospect Ryan Tannehill at quarterback for his senior season. The dual-threat Tannehill will be looking to build on last year's playoff appearance with a more than just a spot in the playoff race. He will be looking to help the Steers get a winning record overall. with good protection up front and around him, the possibility is a reality. With a pair of solid linebackers in Lance Tiss and Cakeb Choate, the Steers should see positive improvement early. And if this squad plays the way they are capable of, then they can pull off a few surprises.

Lake View, like Big Spring, will be looking to spoil the party at the top with Frenship and Plainview on their target list. With plenty of depth in the offensive line and defensive back areas, the Chiefs could be the one team that could be an instant surprise if they work on their game plan and execute it properly. With a strong offensive line, RB Donnell Harris and WR Jonathan Keele could be in prime position to have very big years.
