| District 3-3A Preview |

District 3-3A which will be known as the "Black & Gold District" the next two years, features a race between four teams and three playoffs spots up for grabs. The interest in this district is the fact that there are two very solid teams in Greenwood and Snyder sitting here and an Andrews team that has struggled as of late but been fairly successful at the 4A level, making the drop into 3A territory. Not to mention, a Lamesa squad that is capable of sneaking up on teams when you least expect it. So what we can expect out of this district is a lot of excitement and high expectations not only for district play, but in the playoffs as well.
The Snyder Tigers in 2006 have a combination of youth and experience in key areas of the field but it is very talented youth that should help pave the way for the Tigers to be right in the thick of the district title chase. On offense, the Tigers have RB Will Clay returning to the backfield and Lance Day returning to the defense. The Tigers will have plenty of speed to go around and if they perform like they have the previous two seasons, the sky's the limit to what this group is capable of doing late in the year.
The only school without black and gold donning their uniforms, the Greenwood Rangers, have plenty of optimism and thing to be excited about in 2006. The Rangers not only have the experience, but they have the balanced attack and talent to get them deep into the season. Recently, some have compaed the potential of this squad to the 2002 team that landed in the state championship game. Whether or not this team can achieve such accolades is going to be interesting and fun to watch. A pair of players that will be key to watch includes RB/LB Lane Flowers and WR/DB Michael Washington. Washington and Flowers are expected to make a big impact on both sides of the ball.
With Andrews dropping down to 3A, the Mustangs have reason to be optimistic that things will turn around for this squad. This year's squad is still a very young but talented group that could help Andrews return back to its winning ways. One key senior to watch will be that of DE Stacy Mendoza, who compiled nearly 100 tackles last season. If Mendoza can provide the leadership and keep the Mustangs united, Andrews be a big surprise before it is said and done. WR Eric Kelton will be the go-to receiver on the offense and if Kelton works hard enough, he will have the potential to be playing on Saturdays. |
