| District 1-3A Preview |
|
|
By Christopher Lyke
Texas HS Football Chief Editor
District 1-3A appears to be a race that will be a district where there are going to be two seperate races. One for the district title and the other where the final playoff spot is up for grabs. The consensus overall favorite for the district crown is, whoelse, but the Monahans Loboes. The team expected to challenge the Loboes for the top spot this season is expected to be the Panthers of Fort Stockton. But the question surrounding the Panthers is, can they legitimately knock the Loboes off the top of the mountain? In the other race, Fabens will be joined by Clint and long time rival Pecos for the district's third and final playoff spot. But those three teams may face a challenge of their own from either Tornillo or Anthony.
The Loboes bring back star running back Chris Roberson, who reeled in 1,200 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground. Roberson should be in for a similar season of numbers providing the line, led by Michael Murphree and Ruben Rodriguez puts up the same effort they gave all of last season. Defensively, the Loboes have T.J. Brooks back on the saddle. If the Loboes are anywhere near the level they have been the last two years, they could become a very key sleeper in the state championship picture. But is there anyone in 1-3A that can give them a solid challenge?
All indications of Monahans' biggest competitor becoming the Fort Stockton Panthers. With a majority of the defense returning to the line up this season. The Panthers do have the depth, quickness and experience necessary to challenge Monahans for the top spot. Junior quarterback Sergio Corral is back to led the offense back into not just a district title picture but a playoff run as well. Two of Corral's top targets will be TE Josh Rodriguez and FB M.J. Salmon. On the defensive side of the ball, LB Brazos Peacock, DE Michael Rivera and Renee Corral are expected to provide the big punch and energy. If the defense improves and works with it's experience, there is no reason the Panthers cannot challenge for the top spot.
With Monahans and Fort Stockton duking it out at the top, the race for third may become rather intriguing in its own right. Fabens, Clint and Pecos are expected to make the run at the district's third playoff spot. Fabens has an explosive offense and fairly decent pass rush defense. Look for Gavino Rodriguez, Adrian Estrada and Johnny Briones to have their fair share in receptions. Defensively, Sergio Ceballos and Jesus Carrillo will be the key leaders in handling the opposition.
Clint, which is moving down from Class 4A and out of a very competitive El Paso area district, comes into a golden opportunity to capitalize on the drop down. Like that of Fabens, the Lions have a solid offense on top of a very competitive defensive front. Look for Jaime Pena and Justin Powell to become key in the Lions success offensively.
While Fabens and Clint work their way with the passing game and solid defense, the Pecos Eagles will grind it out on the ground using the Wing T with rusher Luis Ortega. Ortega will be looking add on to the 1,200 yard plus performance from a year ago. DE Robert Nunez, the leading returning tackler also returns. |
