Now let's get the ball rolling for the Marquee Match Ups for the first week of the 2012 season!
REGION I
DeSoto at Arlington Martin (Fri 7:30p)
If you love a good running game with solid line play, this could be the game for you. DeSoto's Dontre Wilson and Arlington Martin's Kyle Hicks are just two of the states most prolific rushers for the 2013 class. Watching DeSoto's DeSoto's speed against Martin's precision should be very fun.
Abilene at Hebron (Fri 7:30p)
This match between Abilene and Hebron is probably one of the more underrated marquee match ups of the week in the state as a whole. Abilene comes into 2012 with one of the state's experienced defenses and could be the ultimate sleeper for a state title push. Hebron is a team that is very similar, but with tons of talent on both sides of the ball. Neither team wants to get off on the wrong foot to start 2012.
Killeen Harker Heights at RR Stony Point (Thu 7:00p)
The Harker Heights Knights are going to hang their hopes on OC Darius James and LB Naashon Hughes to get them through a very challenging district. But first they have a solid non-district opener against a very hungry and angry Stony Point Tigers squad that missed out on the playoffs in 2011.
Mansfield at Arlington Bowie (Fri 7:30p)
The Mansfield Tigers could be a very big problem for its opponents and could be a major surprise by the 2012 season comes full circle and to a close. Players like DB George Baltimore, TE Trent Gow and LB Chad Whitener are the keys to Mansfield's success. The opener against Arlington Bowie, who is another sleeper team in the region, is a solid test to see where Mansfield lines up for the weeks ahead.
REGION II
Southlake Carroll at Allen (Fri 7:30p)
Probably on every site and media outlet's radar screen as the main marquee statewide match up in all levels with both teams highly ranked and with a brand new $60 million stadium making its regular season and world premiere debut. Kenny Hill, Tanner Jacobson and the Dragons will be looking to keep the momentum its has coming off a state championship in 2011.
Coppell vs Longview (Sat 8:00p) (SMU Ford)
Coppell has a true test in a nuetral site against the always dangerous Longview Lobos. The Cowboys will be counting on its dynamic defensive end duo of Solomon Thomas and William Udeh to carry the torch defensively. Longview has a talented defense of its own led by DeMarkus Lathan at linebacker and star in the making in Bivins Caraway III on the offensive side.
The Woodlands at Dallas Skyline (Sat 6:00p) (FC Dallas Stadium)
A battle between two teams that have a very big target on their own chests. Dallas Skyline, WR Reginald Samples and QB DeVante Kincaide comes into the 2012 season as the overall favorite in Class 5A. The Woodlands with WR Jayme Taylor, OG John Huckins and CB Kolbi Brown will be primed and ready to surprise the Raiders in Week Zero. The Highlanders are more than capable of knocking off Skyline. Can they do it?
Austin High at RR Westwood (Fri 7:30p)
While a match up between Austin High and Westwood may not be on the radar screen for many as a maqruee match up, it does have an appeal as a match that could be one of the better ones in Week Zero. Austin High's main attraction is WR Isaiah Jones, who could be facing a very big season. Westwood turns to QB Bear Fenimore, PK Colin McGuire and DB Brad Watson to bring the Warriors to some very big goals.
REGION III
Cypress Ranch at Katy Cinco Ranch (Fri 7:30p)
Neither the Mustangs or Cougars are expected to win their own district, but they both will be teams to watch as both have two of the biggest prizes at the running back position. Cypress Ranch has Keith Ford, who is an Oklahoma commit and comes off 2011 with just over 900 yards rushing. Katy Cinco Ranch has Jamel James, who is committed to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and has 1,000 yards to his 2011 totals.
Clear Springs at GP North Shore (Fri 7:00p)
The North Shore Mustangs certainly could be a forced to be reckoned with in the state title picture. QB Micah Thomas and CB Earnest Thomas are looking to prove that they get the job done and their first step comes with a home game against the Clear Springs Chargers. The Chargers are the favorites for the 24-5A crown and will bring back QB Zach Cripps and LB Cameron Doubenmier to help raise the bar even further.
Cypress Woods vs Klein Collins (Sat 7:00p) (BBVA Compass Stadium)
With a brand new coach in Trent Faith, the Cy Woods Wildcats could be one of the biggest mysteries of the 2012 season. But with LB Deoundrei Davis and QB Nate German, the Wildcats could very well pick up right where they left off in 2011. The first test comes against Klein Collins, which will pin their hopes on RB Marcus Goodson and an experience offensive line that could be among the states best kept secrets.
Bellaire at Alief Taylor (Fri 7:00p)
The Alief Taylor Lions have perhaps one of the most dangerous defenses in the state with DE Torrodney Prevot,, S Jonathan Wiggins and CB Chris Hardeman. The question surrounding the Lions is how far can the defense carry them in 2012. They get their first test against a very potent offensive team in Bellaire, who gets RB Denzell Evans and WR Devin Lauderdale back in 2012.
REGION IV
Cibolo Steele at SA Madison (Fri 7:30p)
If it wasn't for the Allen Eagles opening their new digs against Southlake Carroll, the Cibolo Steele vs SA Madison contest would be the marquee match across the board. Coming off a state chapionship appearance, the Steele Knights will look to what is likely the top DB duo in the state and possibly the country in Erik Huhn and Jordan Sterns to get them back to the top again. But they will have a test with a very hungry SA Madison team that wants to show the road goes through the Mavericks in 2012. RB Marquis Warford and DT Vincent Taylor should give the opposition things to think about.
Lake Travis at Converse Judson (Fri 7:00p)
With five straight state championships in Class 4A, the world welcomes the Lake Travis Cavaliers into Class 5A for the first time and the team rolling out the welcome mat first will be the Converse Judson Rockets. The Rockets, with a brand new head coach, should not lose much of a step. DBs Tre Flowers and Jarveon Williams are a pair of talents that is very comparable to that of Steele's Huhn and Sterns. What they do against the Cavalier offense, which returns QB Baker Mayfield and WR Zach Austin, will be a key one on one battle to watch.
San Benito at Los Fresnos (Fri 7:30p)
The opening contest between the Greyhounds and Falcons is the premeire match in the Rio Grande Valley for Week Zero. Not only are both teams retooled for 2012, they are are both expected to be in the thick of their own district races and there is a chance they could see each other again in the playoffs. The indivdual match up between San Benito RB Arturo Coronado and DB Akeem Simien could be worth the price of admission alone.
Edinburg at McAllen Memorial (Sat 7:00p)
If there is a team out of the Rio Grande Valley in 2012 that could be on par with Harlingen, San Benito and Los Fresnos, it could be the McAllen Memorial Mustangs. LB Garrett Sharp and an experienced front line on both sides, will be a group to watch as the season progresses. Their first match comes against a young Edinburg team that figures to be right in the thick of the playoff race and district title picture of 30-5A.
