As the smallest 11-man football conference in the UIL, Class 1A Division II does have its detractors but like most regions and classes, the competitive atmosphere is right at the top of its game week in, week out. There is np exception to the rule when it comes to Regions I & II in Class 1A Division II. Like most, there is a couple of teams at the top of the food chain that some would like to knock off. For Region I, the team with that target is the Skyrockets of Wellington. In Region II, the Munday Moguls have the edge. Not only does Munday have the edge in in Region II, they also have the state buzzing with the return of the do-everything speedster Dee Paul back for his senior campaign. The question on everyone's mind is what will Paul and the Moguls do for an encore and can they get back to the title game in 2012?
The schedule in Region I and II also has its attractions and must-sees on the docket.
The more intriguing schedule quirks could come from District 5-1A2. By the time the season ends, they will be ready to move on to the big knock-out stage of Texas HS Football because the teams in that district will play round-robin style with a trip to and from each of their district foes. When things are on the line for the playoffs in the final week in 1A2 Regions I & II, the nail biting ensues and there are plenty of match ups where that could go on. Two of the bigger ones includes Springlake-Earth at Bovina and Iraan at McCamey. Another potenially big match up could come out of a challenge from the Electra Tigers as they play host to the Munday Moguls in the final week. If those games can't wait, then there is the Week Zero contest between Stamford and McCamey in Big Spring and then Whitewright travelling to Muenster in Week Four.
Region I & II in Class 1A Division II has some very talented players to watch. Munday's Dee Paul is the one with the spotlight shining down on him, but that light could soon shift westward to Wellington and Booker before the end of the season. Booker QB Hunter Lile, torched defenses in 2011 with over 3,100 yards of air and a grand total of 47 touchdowns. In the same district, Wellington QB Klark Ashmore
threw for 2,665 yards and got 35 balls into the end zone. The Lile-Ashmore showndown is slated for Week 9 in Booker. And with Albany falling into Division II, Jake Bumguardner, who is a solid athlete in all three phases of the game could be the one that steals the show and the keys to the entire region.
If defense is more to the tune of what is in the flavor machine, a player like McCamey's Bubba Greer could be a very big treat in the basket. A little closer to the line could be a player like Miles LB Dylan Havlak, who had almost 160 tackles in 2011, and Munday's Lawrence Collier, who may end up being one of the better defensive players in the state at all levels before all is said and done. A team like Ralls with Kaleb Reese and Crosbyton with Adam Ortiz, will be looking to their stars to help mix in the defensive flavors to a very positive review. |
