-Class of 2006 Top 200 - Wide Receivers
By Christopher Lyke
Texas HS Football Chief Editor

Usually behind a talented quarterback, a wide receiver is not too far behind from the spotlight. The key for a wide receiver is the ability to catch the football and at times, size matters. Not only does the wide receiver have to play against the complex defenses, they will also have to play defense against the defenders themselves.

Who are the worthy receivers, who has a combination of speed and defense, and who has the best hands in the state? The new age of the wide receiver has to be fielded with many of these questions. Some of them will find a way to shine under the most complex offenses, some will find a way to shne under a single or pair of games and others will shine and elevate with some of the top plays in the state.

Looking at who has already made a verbal commitment, one can say Texas and Texas A&M have taken the lead in the recruiting wars at wide receivers. Texas has recieved commitments from Phillip Payne of South Garland and Montrae Webber of Hearne while Texas A&M has gotten a pair from Cody Beyer of Smithson Valley and Jerrod Johnson of Humble. Brigham Young also picked up a Texas based verbal from Southlake Carroll's McKay Jacobsen. And Kansas, with former Summit head coach Tim Beck as an assistant, picked up Xavier Rambo of Wilmer Hutchins.

Some key receivers to keep an eye on for 2005 include Abilene's Lyle Leong, Wylie's Jeremy Brubaker, Kyle Drabek of The Woodlands and LaGerald Betters of Waco. The age of the spread is a key factor and revolutionized the exposure that some of the state's top receivers will get. Leong, Drabek, Brubaker and others are the big beneficiaries of the evelving popularity of the famed ofensive formation.

Among the the key sleepers to watch for include Liberty Eylau's Phillip Blackwell, L.D. Bell's DeAndre English and Nederland's Ryan Butler. Look for English to be the top receiver for Bell's new offense and become Joe Mauro's top target. Blackwell and Butler are two of the best receivers in the state that currently play with two of the most respected programs in the state. Blackwell and Butler will be the key to whether Nederland and Liberty Eylau will find a way to compete for regional supremacy and hope for a shot at the next level.
