-Class of 2006 Top 200 - Quarterbacks
By Christopher Lyke
Texas HS Football Chief Editor

The state of Texas has been widely known for its quarterbacks entering the college scene at an alarming rate in the last few years. Vincent Young, Drew Tate, Reggie McNeal, Brian Johnson and Aaron Polanco are just a few of the names that have made a name for themselves in high profile games over national television. The state's quarterback prospect list continues to be a hot commodity to a nationwide talent search and the class of 2006 will be no different.

Who are the key players to watch or keep an eye out for in 2005? What do they bring to the table? And who are the sleeper recruits that may come alive at the end of the year? Many of the answers to these questions are often answered by the middle of the season or by the first two rounds of the playoffs.

One of the quarterbacks who ended up making a name for himself in a playoff setting is that of Matthew Stafford at Highland Park. In the 2003 season against the Ennis Lions, Stafford's cool and collectiveness helped the Scots storm past the Lions seemingly unbeatable mentality. A year and a half later and entering his senior season, Stafford will be preparing for a stint with the University of Georgia.

Other quarterbacks have also made their commitments known such as Arlington Bowie's Sherrod Harris, Abilene's Taylor Potts and Stephenville's Jevan Snead. And Stafford isn't the only Texas quarterback headed to the Southeastern Conference. Snead made his choice known this summer as he will be looking to sign with the Florida Gators. Harris and Potts meanwhile, will be staying put in the state of Texas for their college days. Harris will have the eyes of the state upon him at UT-Austin while Taylor Potts settles for pass-happy Texas Tech.

Other players who will be in high profile spots this upcoming offseason, will be Greg McElroy, who served as the back up to Chase Daniel on the state and national champion Southlake Carroll Dragons, L.J. Castille of highly ranked and 4A favorite La Marque, Pierre Beasley of Spring Westfield, Clark Harrell of Ennis and Case Keenum of Abilene Wylie.

Several key sleepers to watch for include Joe Mauro of L.D. Bell, Sean Gilley of Dayton, Todd Reesing of Lake Travis and J.P. Tillman of Cy Falls. The production of these quarterbacks may show whether they are ready for the next level or will be a progress at work with countless potential. Mauro will be heading into the 2005 season under a new offense and new head coach, Gilley is now at Dayton after transferring over from Lumberton and Reesing and Tillman will be in the mix of a competitive district race.
