The linebacker position is probably the deepest position in the Class of 2006 for recruiting and talent purposes. Being in the middle of the defense provides more of a leadership and awareness role. The role of linebacker could come in a variety of spots on the defensive side. As an extended lineman, front defensive back, outside or inside, the linebacker must quickly scout the offense for a run or pass.
Among the top linebackers who have already commited to schools across the country includes six different schools. Both Texas and Oklahoma State got the jump start with four commits by the end of July. The Longhorns picked up Dustin Earnest, Sergio Kindle, Britt Mitchell and Jared Norton. The Cowboys grabbed two from Irving MacArthur in Jeff Berueter and Justin Gent, Deron Fontenot of South Grand Prairie and DeMarcus Connor of Spring Westfield.
Other schools that have also gotten verbals from Texas prospects include Texas Tech, which grabbed two in Blake Collier of Justin Northwest and Marlon Williams of Pflugerville. UTEP, New Mexico State and Vanderbilt are the other schools that got verbals early on.
Among the key sleepers to watch for in the state includes Josh Mitzel of Keller, Shane Jarka of Fort Bend Austin, Chris Sanders of Corsicana and Brett Ginn in Mansfield Timberview. The key for all four of these players will be how well they perform in the clutch against high profile opposition.
Jarka's chances to shine will come with the emergence of Fort Bend Marshall and Hightower. Mitzel will have and even tougher challenge with the likes of Southlake Carroll, Denton Ryan, Haltom and Fossil Ridge. Sanders and Ginn have the likes of Ennis and Waxahachie. If these four perform rather well against the high profile opponents, it will go a long way towards proving where they stand in the recruiting field by Signing Day. |
