The most ignored position on the field as far as talent and recruiting goes. Yet the kickers and punters can often prove to be perhaps the most critical part of the game and could possibly be the biggest difference maker one can think of. Field position for punters can be a stat that can make or break the defensive production. A field goal or missed extra point can make or break a game and possibly a team's championship hopes.
Hunter Lawrence of Boerne is considered as one of the state's top kickers. Committing to the University of Texas, Lawrence will have high expectations laid upon him as Jason Bondzio of Humble and Garrett Hartley of Southlake Carroll have in the last few years. How far Lawrence can carry the Boerne Greyhounds will be the biggest staple on his senior season.
Some key kickers to watch
include Aaron Esikhati of Midland Lee, Tyler Driskell of Abilene Wylie and David Sweet of Smithson Valley. Three kickers in high profile programs. Two of which ended up in the state championship game last season. Esikhati will be looking to avenge Midland Lee's early exit from 2004. Driskell and Sweet will try to help bring their teams back into the championship picture.
A key punter to watch is Michael Such from the Allen Eagles. Such's excellent punting abilities have help the Allen Eagles gain valuable field position on defense and has effectively help guide the Eagles to additional district titles. If he can repeat what he has accomplished in the last three years and carry it over to the playoffs, a decent playoiff run and a call from a serious Division I school will be coming. |
