-Class of 2006 Top 200 - Defensive Linemen
By Christopher Lyke
Texas HS Football Chief Editor

The responsibilty of a defensive linemen far outweighs the accolades of the position itself. Blocking, tackling, strength and technique are just four of the many factors in being a successful lineman. Hands, leg strength, and upper body positioning also plays a big role. Some statistical categories such as tackles, sacks, forced fumbles, pass blocks and interceptions are key in the way we see a lineman's performance.

Many of the scouts will not only be looking at stats, but also how the lineman performs under different senarios of the various offenses and formations on defense. Reaction time against the various offenses is a key indicator of where a lineman will be successful at the next level. Looking over who is ready to take the next step and who has already made the moves to the collegiate level with a verbal commitment, one could say, the state is one of the country's hotspots for defensive line talent.

Making the verbal public already includes Dan'Tay Ward of Waco going to Baylor, Pryce Macon of Corpus Christi Carroll heading for Sooner Country and Wayne Daniels of Kilgore heading to Houston. Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Texas have picked up two commits rather early with Leslie Ray of Midland Lee and Cody Williams of Longview heading to College Station to play for the Aggies of Texas A&M. Adrian Hamilton of Dallas Carter and Trent Perkins of Alice are headed for Stillwater as Brian Ellis of South Grand Prairie and Eddie Jones of Kilgore go to Austin.

Key players to be on the lookout for 2005 include Zach Thomas of Stephenville, Broderick Marshall of Austin McCallum and Chris Luckey of Liberty Hill. Thomas will be the crucial leader of Stephenville's defense, which could be the favorite to march out of the Region I playoff picture. Marshall is going to be the key to proving that Austin McCallum is no fluke and will be a threat in the playoffs and district competition. And finally Liberty Hill may be known better for its running game with Matt Escamilla and Casey Kociuba, but in 2005, if the Panthers will be any bit as successful as they were in 2004, Luckey will be the key workhorse off the line.
