The spread offense and the evolving passing game has made the defensive game more of a focus and more of a watch of the skills for a defensive back. With more and more schools looking at the spread offense as their main choice of weaponry for moving down the field, the supply and demand of quality defensive backs has increased ever drastically over the last few years.

The hands, foot speed, the ability to stop at high speeds, tackling techniques and positioning has made the defensive back position a whole lot more complex. Whether the back is tall or small, without a solid grasp at techniques and skills, the look and scouting of a player will be seen in high profile plays, whether it is a long run or a deep pass.

Looking over some of the players who have commited early on, Kenneth Beasley of West Orange Stark and Robert Joseph of Port Arthur Memorial made the decision to be Longhorns next spring. While Bealey and Joseph made their choice for burnt orange, James Henry of Schertz Clemens and Jonathan Nelson of Mansfield Summit will be playing Sooner red north of the Red River.

Some key players to be on the lookout for includes Deymone Hogg of Denton Ryan, Andy Kiser of Alvarado and Keith Toston of Angleton. The common theme among these three is that they will be seeing plenty of the passing game and a high probably of rushers entering the defensive backfield. And not only do the passing and rushing exposure gives them a boost, high quality opposition will give them a great chance for scouts to find them.
