OVERVIEW
One of the finalists for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award as a senior, Stefan continued the school's tradition of producing standout quarterbacks, following Dave Ragone, Chris Redman, Jeff Brohm and Browning Nagle, all whom received national honors during their time at Louisville … A four-year starter at Christian Life Academy, where he also lettered three times in basketball and four times in track, Stefan led the team to the state playoffs every year. He threw for almost 6,000 yards and accounted for 59 touchdowns in his prep career. He earned all-state honors as a senior after throwing for 2,100 yards and 28 touchdowns and rushing for 500 yards and six scores in 1999. He was also a standout defensive back, earning all-state honors after intercepting eleven passes as a junior.
Comes from a loving family and is well-versed in sign language; his parents are deaf … Redshirted at Louisville in 2000 and saw action in only five games in 2001, completing 3-of-9 passes for 63 yards while spending most of his time holding for extra points and field goals … The following season, Stefan would appear in only three contests, hitting on 5-of-7 passes for 49 yards and a score … Took over the starting quarterback job for a departed Ragone in 2003; responded with a career-high 3,145 yards and 17 touchdowns on 219 of 357 attempts (61.3 percent) … Only Redman (3647 in 1999 and 4,042 in 1998) threw for more yards in a season for the Cardinals … Started every game as a senior, but shared some of that playing time with touted recruit Brian Brohm … Completed 189-of-257 passes (73.5 percent, the best percentage in the nation) for 2,596 yards, 20 touchdowns and only three interceptions … His interception percentage of 1.16 broke the old school season-record of 1.6 by Marty Lowe in 1995 … For his Louisville career, LeFors threw for 5,853 yards with 38 touchdowns and 13 interceptions on 416-of-630 passes … His 38 scoring passes tied Jeff Brohm (1989-93) for fourth on the school's career record list and his 5,853 yards also rank fourth in Louisville annals … His completion percentage of 66.0 broke the previous school all-time record of 61.4 by Redman (1996-99) … Also gained 756 yards with six touchdowns on 146 carries (5.2 avg), topping the old school career record for quarterback of 597 yards on the ground by Ragone (1999-02) … Only Ragone (9,161) and Redman (12,129) surpass his 6,609 yards in total offense in school annals.
ANALYSIS
Compactly built athlete who lacks the size and bulk you look for in a
pro quarterback, but his scrambling ability and quickness could see him
shift to halfback or safety at the pro level (was an all-state
defensive back in high school) … Shows toughness in the pocket vs. the rush and can step up and out to avoid pressure in the pocket … Better suited for the short-to-intermediate-area passing game, as he has a good, but not a powerful arm … His passes tend to lose some velocity when throwing on the move … Works from the shotgun quite a bit, but does have the quickness and fluidity in his setup … Left-handed passer who carries the ball numbers-high and has solid over-the-top mechanics, but will over-extend at times when unleashing the deep ball … Finishes with square shoulders and set feet and shows a good delivery point to generate zip and quickness in his release … Has good awareness of the blitz and shows the nimble feet to avoid tackles … High-percentage passer, but that is because he throws a lot of underneath passes … Not the type who can throw the long ball consistently; his passes lack the velocity and touch in that area … However, while he might not be the best solution for a vertical, downfield game, he will fit in well with a West Coast system where he can display his accuracy on crossing, underneath and dump-off throws … Has a soft touch, but when he overextends, the ball does not come out with a tight spiral … Very effective at leading his receivers to the ball, but his targets sometimes have to come back for his deep throws … Quick, elusive runner with a good feel stepping up in the pocket … Might lack the ideal size, but certainly shows rare speed for his position … When he operates in the short area, he can really zip the ball with velocity … Shows very good communication skills with his receivers (some picked up using sign language, making their communication better when breaking off routes) … Has good lower body strength and can break tackles on the run … Despite a lack of ideal size, he reads coverages well and makes proper checks at the line … Type that can look off and freeze the safeties with his fakes and play-action … Rarely forces the ball into traffic and does a good job of getting through progressions … In a West Coast offense, he could be another Jeff Garcia, thanks to his foot speed.
