OVERVIEW
Jones emerged as a deep threat for the Sooners in his junior year. With Oklahoma putting an increased emphasis on the passing game, he was an integral part of the receiving corps. He joined Mark Clayton and Mark Bradley to give Oklahoma the finest depth the Sooners have ever had in their pass-catching unit.
The fact Jones is even playing football today is due to the strong recruiting sell of the coaching staff. He might have been roaming the outfield for the New York Yankees instead, as the former world champions selected him in the 2001 Major League Baseball draft.
Jones was highly sought-after as a receiver coming out of Liberty Eylau (Texas) High School. He was a serious dual threat during his senior season, catching 32 passes for 609 yards and seven touchdowns and rushing for 193 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries (7.4 average). He earned his second consecutive Class 3A Offensive Player of the Year award that year, after originally garnering those honors as a junior after catching 50 passes for 1,092 and 15 touchdowns. He also returned two punts for touchdowns, including one for 72 yards. Jones led Liberty Eylau to a 14-1 record and the 2000 Class 3A state championship. He also ran track and played baseball, finishing his prep baseball career with a .350 batting average.
Jones played mostly on special teams as a true freshman at Oklahoma, catching two passes for 16 yards while gaining 150 yards on seven punt returns (21.4 average) and recording two solo tackles. He was a reserve receiver, playing in 10 games in 2002, as he snared seven passes for 117 yards (16.7 average) and three touchdowns. Brandon would start 12 games as a junior, hauling in a career-high 46 passes for 709 yards (15.4 average) and eight touchdowns. Only Clayton's 15 scoring grabs in 2003 are better than Jones' eight on the school's season-record list.
Jones split time with Mark Bradley as a senior. He started eight games and ranked third on the team with 27 catches for 345 yards (12.8 average) and three touchdowns. Jones also made five tackles and returned a kickoff 18 yards in special teams action. For his career, Jones started 20 of 42 games. He caught 82 passes for 1,187 yards (14.5 avg.) and 14 touchdowns. Only Clayton (31, 2001-04), Keith Jackson (15, 1984-87) and Trent Smith (16, 1999-2002) had more scoring receptions in a career at Oklahoma.
ANALYSIS
Positives: Has broad shoulders, long arms, well-built upper body, big bubble, thick thighs and calves and tight waist and hips … Has above-average flexibility, balance and body control … Tough, physical catcher who can move around and catch the ball in a crowd … Aggressive route runner who pushes the field and has developed into a very productive red-zone target … Fluid at the top of the route and has a subtle weave to freeze the cornerback … Adjusts to the ball in the air, using his long arms and body control to compete for jump balls … Best when working over the middle, as he shows very good leg power and the ability to break arm tackles … Uses his body effectively to shield and can leverage for position in tight situations … Has strong and reliable hands, routinely catching with arms extended away from the frame … Does a nice job of adjusting low and back for the bad throws … Strong and competitive runner who can gain additional yardage after the catch … Turns upfield and fights for yardage … Can split defenders and break some tackles … Aggressive blocker who gets after the defender, battles to stay on and will finish with good strength.
Negatives: Smooth runner, but lacks a sudden burst off the snap and needs to gather before getting to top speed … Better in the short area, as he seems to lose sight of the ball on deep routes … Will power through tackles, but lacks good hip wiggle to elude … Looks stiff when changing direction and lacks explosion through his cuts … Does not have the second gear needed to head up field and elude after the catch (most of his yards after the catch comes from generating power, rather than a burst).
