Anthony Alabi
6'5
310
SA Antonian TCU
OVERVIEW

Alabi is a two-time first-team All-Conference USA selection who made 35 career starts, tying for the most among the 2004 seniors. He has tremendous physical tools, is extremely athletic and one of the team's strongest players, having squatted over 800 pounds.

Alabi attended Antonian College Prep, where he was a four-year letterman in football and also lettered in basketball and track. He earned all-district and all-state honors in football and track, and was the team MVP in his junior and senior seasons on the gridiron. As a defensive lineman, he led the team in sacks (13) and tackles (82). Alabi was also a two-time state champion in track (shotput).

Alabi came to Texas Christian as a defensive lineman, redshirting in 2000. He originally attended the U.S. Naval Academy in 1999 before transferring to TCU. He played in 10 games at left offensive tackle in 2001, missing two contests after suffering a concussion.

He took over left tackle duties in 2002, leading an offensive line that allowed only 22 quarterback sacks for the season. In 2003, Alabi was named All-Conference USA first team. He started 12 games at left tackle, sitting out the Alabama-Birmingham contest with an ankle sprain. In 2004, he was again chosen to the All-Conference USA first team and helped the offense average 32.9 points per game.

ANALYSIS

Positives:Has a tall frame with good chest thickness, broad shoulders, muscular arms, wide hips, good bubble and thick legs … Power blocker with impressive size and bulk … Well-proportioned athlete who generates a sudden surge off the snap … Rolls his hips on contact and has that "mauler" mentality to explode into defenders … Shows outstanding foot work and second-level quickness to position properly and sustain his blocks in pass protection … Has a good kick slide to get back and seal off the outside and is most effective when taking on defenders right in front of him … Shows good cover-up ability, positioning himself for in-line blocking … Takes proper angles moving out to neutralize linebackers in the open field … Has long arms necessary for pass protection … Shows enough awareness and lateral movement in pass protection to mirror and pick up stunts well … His trap blocking skills might be better suited to play offensive guard … Has shown marked improvement in using his leg strength to anchor more firmly against the bull rush … When he brings his hands up quickly off the snap, he is capable of moving the pile.

Negatives:Has the ideal size for the position, but needs to be more physical and aggressive … Shows good overall play strength, but has stiffness in his hips that make him unable to bend his knees in order to establish good technique and leverage positioning … Plays on his toes a lot, causing problems maintaining balance and struggles to recover when beaten by the outside rush … Needs to show better hand usage as he will tend to make passive punches towards his man with little effect, spending more time catching defenders, and this leads to him struggling to lock out and sustain blocks … Lacks the agility to slide out on sweeps, crossing his feet and keeping a narrow leg base to make defenders knock him off stride … Little too slow-footed when he has to run and change directions out in space … Despite his weight-room strength, he does not generate enough pop and punch with his hands and also fails to recoil consistently … More of a catch-and-steer drive blocker than a mauler and is susceptible to the double move.

AGILITY

Campus: 5.31 in the 40-yard dash … 500-pound bench press … 810-pound squat … 475-pound power clean … 30-inch vertical jump … 8-foot-1" broad jump … Right-handed … Combine: 5.23 in the 40-yard dash … 2.97 20-yard dash … 1.84 10-yard dash … 4.6 20-yard shuttle … 7.62 three-cone drill … 32½-inch vertical jump … 8-foot-9 broad jump … Bench pressed 225 pounds 18 times … 36¾-inch arm length … 10 3/8-inch hands.
