A look at the 2005 THSF Playoffs in 2006 format, other plans
By Christopher Lyke

Part 1 of 3

The history of the playoff expansion era in Texas high school football continues to evolve as realignment continues to spiral in multiple directions. As new schools are built, the demand for better opportunity to make the post-season increases at an all-time high. Starting in the 2006 season, the additional playoff team was added not just at the 5A level, but at the 1A and Six Man levels as well.

The 2005 season could very well be the very last year we see a "true" state champion in football. Instead of opting for the current format in both 1A and Six Man, the move was made to crown an addition state champion, which would like that of 5A to 2A, split the two into two divisions by enrollment.

Class 5A will be adding an additional playoff spot in Divsion I, raising the playoff qualifiers from three to four. The two biggest schools in each district will be assigned to play in Divsion I while the two smaller schools would advance to play in Division II.

Many opponents of the new format have expressed their displeasure over the current format as well. Some would argue that the two division split is practically unfair. There have indeed been a few times where the Divsion II champion was larger in enrollment than that of the Division I champion.

Nowhere is there more opposition to the split divisional format than that of Six Man football. Later we will examine what the 1A-Six Man and 1A 11-Man playoff picture of 2005 would have looked like under the 2006 format.

We will also examine what the playoff picture would look like in all classifications under the proposed SuperBracket format. Plus we will also take a look at what the playoff picture would look like under a proposed seeded bracket using a computer ratings system. The SuperBracket and seeded bracket formats will be examined in part two of our three part series on different playoff systems in Texas high school football.

Now that you have seen what the pairings look like in 5A, 1A and Six Man with the new formats, the question now directs back to square one. Could the additional playoff spot in all three levels be as drastic a change as originally thought? Could the biggest beneficiary in 1A and Six Man be a more competitive playoff race from start to finish?

The biggest sign and assurance out of the new format starting in 2006 will be the possible elimination of "bye" districts at the 1A level. Could we see a similar 16 district format in 1A than we do in Six Man? If that is the case, the additional playoff spot may be extra incentive for the super districts yet to follow.

Part two of our three part series on playoff formats will continue in the third round of the playoffs with a look at the SuperBracket format under all classifications.
