Steve Clarkson Dream Maker (SMU Event)
By Christopher Lyke
Texas HS Football Chief Editor

Some of the state's top quarterbacks recently made an appearance at the Steve Clarkson Dream Maker Tour stop at Gerald Ford Stadium on the campus of SMU in Dallas. Quarterbacks from the Class of 2011 on down to fifth and six graders came out for the event. With 2011 quarterbacks competiting in hopes of being selected to Steve Clarkson's Super 7 in Maui in July, the competition and focus was set a very high level.

Among the clients in recent years Steve Clarkson has assisted includes Matt Leinart, Nick Montana, Terrelle Pryor, Phillip Sims, Russell Shepard, Trevor Gretzky and Matt Barkley. A major focus of Clarkson and the rest of the coaches organizing the event is working with the athletes and their foot work in a number of varieties as well as handling the snaps and performing under pressure.

Among the particpants for the March 6 event at Ford Stadium included Denton Guyer and Oklahoma State commit J.W. Walsh, Pittsburg's Mitch Manley, Austin Westlake's Preston Dewey, Cedar Hill's Driphus Jackson, Cy Woods' Colton Huntsman (pictured at right), Friendswood's Pete Maetzold and Tyler Lee's Preston Conder.

Among the participants in the event was Arp's Kyle Copeland, who will be a junior in the upcoming 2010 football season. "I learned a lot better mechanics and foot work, keeping my feet underneath me," Copeland noted. "I think you can apply everything you learn here to be apart of your game."

In a big sense, the Steve Clarkson Dream Maker event gave a strong majority of the quarterbacks attending a great deal of confidence and a better understanding of what they needed to work on and apply to their own game regardless of the offense their individual schools ran. Whether it is footwork, accuracy, how to handle the snap, and competiting against others, the camp should help prepare each individual for not only the season ahead, but for the college game as well.

TexasHSFootball.com's Top 15 quarterbacks in the 2011 class and the Top 8 underclassmen to come from the Steve Clarkson Dream Maker Tour stop in Dallas are listed at the right side of the page. Overall impressions are below.

Overall Impressions

Steve Clarkson overall attracted a great deal of talent from the quarterback position from all over the state and throughout the region. There were even quarterbacks at the camp from Idaho and Virginia in attendance. In terms of how it is run, it is clearly and without a doubt one of the best camps out there. Very well organized, serves a great deal of purpose and strives on teaching the basics and builds a solid competitive balance among the elite quarterbacks.

As far as the talent on the field, most of the eyes were on Denton Guyer's J.W. Walsh and Pittsburg's Mitch Manley. Both Walsh and Manley are very tall, very athletic and showed they are really hungry to improve themselves to be better and more diverse in their skill set. Among the players whose stoock clearly rose at the event includes Cy Woods' Colton Huntsman, Friendswood's Pete Maetzold and Flower Mound's Paul Millard. Some others that a lot should keep an eye on for the next year includes Dallas First Baptist's Zach Gregory, Wichita Falls Rider's Malcolm Carter, Austin Anderson's Sam Wehmeyer and Coppell's Joe Minden.

With the underclassmen there were lots of great players out at Ford Stadium. At the top of the list are Bay City's Derek Brown, Highland Park's Brady Burgin and Arp's Kyle Copeland. And while, he is in a lower class and coming in as a freshman in 2010, watch Klark Ashmore in the next couple years grow and develop into a true diamond in the rough.
